Fair point Homer, as I say I'm not going to blindly defend all the signings as we did pay over the odds, and i thought we bought too many centre midfielders. Another striker (wanted demba Ba) and a right winger (wanted nzogbia) was also needed for this season.

Still early days, as a lot more twists and turns to come, you only have to look at results from even just the last week. We are looking like the back marker for champs league, but look at Arsenal after 10 games, and they are now possible favourites for 4th ahead of us and Chelsea. I think the two mancs and spurs will get the top 3 (as most do).

I still want Kenny to be the main man though (at least for now).

I think you need to consider reality here when we talk about who Dalglish has bought and what he paid. Dalglish is nothing more than a football coach and public figure head. The man in charge of scouting, negotiations, acquisitions and pulls the purse is Damien Comolli. He answers to the owners and the board, not Kenny Dalglish.

The Liverpool machine is quite happy to go along with the public perception that Kenny is king and he takes credit or blame for signings. Yet Kenny was at home watching the telly or in bed when Comolli was up till midnight negotiating the Carroll deal

Comolli is the new breed of director of football that is coming to fore. Ferguson is perhaps one of the last of the all power embracing managers. We like to think as good old fashioned footy fans the manager is boss, not so in the modern corporate game I’m afraid.

That was Benitez’s big issue with the owners, he wanted to be the old fashioned all powerful manager. It wasn’t ever going to happen. When Fergy goes his replacement will have to fall into line with today’s commercial management styles and get on with coaching and team selection from what he’s given

Dalglish runs the show at Liverpool. Comolli simply scouts and suggests players. Nothing goes ahead without the say so of Dalglish. If he agrees to it then Comolli tries to seal the deal. The same thing happens at Man Utd. Ferguson doesn't do all the scouting or the deals himself, he simply gives them the approval and then the Chief Exec does the deals, or tries to.

Comolli when at Spurs normally favoured foreign buys, with a great deal of success, so it would seem strange and totally out of character he suddenly recommended the likes of Downing, Carroll, Adam and Henderson. To go from unearthing the likes of Berbatov, Modric, Kabul, Essuo-Ekotto, Taarbabt and Prince-Boateng, to over-paying for British talent doesn't add up.

The problem Liverpool have with Dalglish, is he represents the old successful Liverpool. He's a legend and untouchable. The new owners will never have the backbone to meddle or risk upsetting the fans. The fans view his work with rose tinted glasses due to his legacy at the club previously. That's understandable but isn't a healthy situation. Almost anyone else who had spent £120m in a year and had so little to show for it in terms of value, results and progress would be under serious pressure.
