Following on from another post here today.

I found a Dunlop 65 the other day and was planning on using it in our roll up tomorrow. However went up to play the 9 hole course at the club today and thought I would run a little experiment and compare it to a number of modern premium balls.

Which were;

Prov1 and Prov 1X
TM penta tp5
Srixon Z star
Wilson FG tour
Callaway hex black
Bridgestone rxs

Unfortunately, I shanked the Dunlop 65 off the first tee and lost it in a gorse bush!!!!:(

Carried on with the test with the others though, as I always us a Pro V as my ball of choice and occasionally dabble with the others, but never use a Callaway or TM penta. I usually just give them away to mates when ever I find any which is a lot.

I was amazed to find the callaway performed the best, went 5- 10 yards further and stopped dead despite the greens on the Cameron course being rather firm.

The Callaway did cut up the most and after only 6 wedge shots it was cut to pieces.

Very interesting, shame about the Dunlop though!!!!

if you really want to see the difference in even relatively recent ball technology, try a ProV1 against an 'old' ProV1 392 and, if available, a wound PTS 384.

simple easy 'test' which will show quite marked distance differences.

I have a dozen new Commando Plus which I won as a joke raffle prize when I wasn't present at the prize choosing. You can have them for experimental purposes - price negotiable.

Not sure if comparing current balls to old wound balls would work as my understanding is that the old balls' peformance will fall over time due to the rubber used in their construction deteriorating and losing its elasticity. Might be wrong. maybe ScienceBoy or any other sciencey types can advise.

nothing obvious - will run one through the band saw and take a look at the rubber. Have many dozen boxed and well stored!

I had a little wee........:o

how long did u spent looking for it

er not long, straight in, just thought..... Bugger!

Played with my mate, when explained what i was doing to him, and then i shermaned it he fell about...!

I knew it would brighten up most on heres day, i was funny though.

As for the ball, i was keen to check the distances as when i had hit one before, they appeared to perform much better than the new er ball.

So if anyone wants to donate and old wound balls for me to try this again PM me. I think next time i'll start on the championship course. less chance of hitting a shank on the first tee.:)
