Hey guys, looking for advice on my options... best if i bullet point them.

Im needing new irons and wedges.

I know my custom fitting measurements to some degree which makes option 1 possible.

1. Ben Hogan clubs - online order only ... cheapest value option but only get to trial 2x non fitted samples.

2. American Golf - good choice, interest free payment options... free fitting.

3. Scott Gourlay fitting - top independent fitter, but i prob cant afford the wee extras they do like fine tuning the shafts.
and im pretty sure they will charge a premium on shafts and club head compared with american golf...

Im currently off 14 but dropping fast and having been out the game for years, im planning to be playing a lot and getting
down to single figures fairly soon... but to be fair it has to be said that premium, fine tuned clubs wont make a massive
difference right now, compared with technique refinement....

Im an indecisive git, so any advice or shared experiences people have would really be appreciated.

Thanks. Nick.

Based on my local AG you will get a decent fitting but I've just been to my local pro who has all the toys and had a full fitting. There was no charge for this as I've ordered a full set of irons through him.

When you get a full fitting

Some of the items that may be looked at which will not be looked at for an off the shelf fit.

Customised swing weighting
Soft or hard stepping of shafts ie they fit a 6 iron shaft in to the 7 iron or vice versa (there are 3 steps between each club shaft)
Precise fitting of grip thickness
Frequency matching of shafts
Spine alignment of shafts

If you were on a flat hole on a warm day at sea level with no wind and you were 150 yards to the centre of a green surrounded by bunkers, what club would you hit?

If the OP is Edinburgh based then a Scott Gourlay rather than a Braids AG fitting would be better IMO (but as stated more costly - and possibly substantially so)

I like the AG folk there as i often go there when visiting my father who lives nearby (I may be practising my hacking there later in the week) - but I'm not convinced that their fitting would be an accurate full fit
  • I had faced the same conundrum and considered both - in the end i got a rather perfunctory / basic fit in Italy - suits my standard for the moment
If the intent is to move from a 14 hcp to low (<5) then a full fit may help - especially as the OPs ball striking seems good (as above and as per a 150 yd 9-iron) - and probably likely to last for a few years

I suggest you get measured/tested by a proper fitter
Im getting lessons soon from the pro associated with scott gourlay fitting... i might wait till ive had the one hour game assessment from him... and then ask his advice... of course he will push me to a fitting but he might have recommendations on timing etc.... need some serious overtime to save up lol.

Our longest hole has about 150 yards off the whites and 120 off the yellows to the women’s tee. Very easy to not beat it 😂.

At a recent comp I never made it past one of ours
My PPs said that in Italy the convention is that I had to buy everyone a beer
After mustering the full dignity of someone coming from the home of golf - I stated - "Really....We don't have such a thing in Scotland" :p

Having a similar dilemma at the moment. I am having a great summer and dropped from 24 to 17. I will be looking to get custom fitted this winter, popped into a local AG and was surprised by the amount of options they offered. I just assumed their fitting service would be quite basic.

I am more drawn to them by the fact they have every manufacturer to test and asses whereas local clubs have a couple only.

Looking at some of the other posts I guess it’s a case of grilling their fitters to assess their experience and knowledge and seeing if I feel comfortable putting my game in their hands.

The problem with grilling someone about their knowledge of something,is you need to know what your asking .
Most of us don’t know what we’re talking about when it gets technical.
