We'd like to take this opportunity to wish you a Happy Holidays and a very Merry Christmas from all at Golf Monthly. Thank you for sharing your 2025 with us!
I lost a scratch match play finals once and all the scratch/county players were drawn against each other in the first half of the draw.
The bottom half had a 4 handicapper as the lowest player.
I battled through the top half to lose the final on the 36th hole to the 4 handicapper.
Anyone see the docudrama "Bert & Dickie " last week? About the two British rowers in the 1948 Olympics? They deliberately came second in the first round so as to avoid the toughest opposition in the next round. Did we grumble about that? Unfortunately for them, the oppo did exactly the same thing but better...
One serious one in answer to the original post - blobbing the last to avoid a cut!
Deliberately losing a game is wrong no matter what the circumstances and for those particular badminton players it shows a distinct lack of faith in their own ability to beat the opponents in the next round. It also shows a complete lack of respect for the opponent you are trying to engineer a game against. Swimmers or runners conserving energy in a heat is completely different because you are not doing so to gain an advantage to avoid a particular opponent.
