My dilemma was that even tho I am gift wrapping them a full crime report in a nice little bow what will actually happen to the report? Police numbers are down and they don’t have time to look into trivial things like a stolen wallet with £20 in it. So isn’t it just a waste of their time

If all crimes are not reported then statistics will show less crimes, less crimes = less Police.
It’s more Police that are required, not less.

As someone has already pointed out, the police may be able to identify the culprit as a regular customer and you will have provided them with the means to collar the nasty little scrote.

When stuff starts getting hired on your driving licence, produced as the ID at the time of hiring, doesn't get returned and the police end up knocking on your door for an explanation you might be grateful for your crime report telling them when your driving licence left your possession.

If you ever lose any identity documents report them missing ASAP.
