am i the only one that does this?

I use an old ball on a couple of our holes even in comps but I always play out with that ball on the hole whether a comp, bounce or practice game. I also make sure I inform my playing partners I'm changing balls before and after I do it in a comp even though one of my regular partners knows I'm going to do it.

Some one can tell me if im wrong but your not allowed to swap your ball half way thru a hole, UNLESS its damaged
You might be on your own for that one once i start with a ball i finish with it
But on "those" holes i do start with a cheaper one but i finish with it too

To Op, no not on your own, I wont hit a new ball when faced with a 150 yrd + carry, even in comp. I'm not going to watch a good one sail into the mire (& its not the choice of ball that'll stop me making it over)

Weirdly I also try to make sure I have a really nice new ball on a short par 3 (never know if you're gonna have to get it mounted to stick on the mantlepiece :D ) still waiting though

Why don't you just play with a crap cheap ball for the whole round. The fact you'll not be bothered about losing it will probably result in your best round ever if that is your approach to the game and the possibility of a lost "premium" ball.

like combing your hair before a photograph :) sorry scouser ;)

Im really surprised at how many people have referred to the rules of changing a ball etc

The bloke clearly means when having a knock for no money or handicap purposes etc... Played last night and put my first tee shot in the drink... thought right no new pretty balls are being used tonight and ended up shooting a really good score with an old topflite...

Its all mental... I am sure someones sig says something like Golf 10% mental... 90% mental.

I agree with the negative thought viewpoint. You just CAN'T be thinking 'what if I lose it?' before hitting the shot! Same thing applies to taking an extra ball to a back/high/inconvenient tee just in case you lose the drive. Play brand new ProV1s all the time. Make it hurt to lose one!

I do the same thing with 1 exception i do not change the ball once i have tee off with i i hole out with it the change it back on next hole. i use srixon z star tour yellow and i hate losing them so i have some dunlop tour pro which i find a good ball and if i lost them no drama at all. One hole in my golf course is a pig, you can not see where it lands and one of the boys the last 4 times we have played it has hit a perfect drive but is ball has gone awol. common sense to me but use the same ball to finish the hole, that way you do not break any rules and nobody will even know..

Well I have to say I'm amazed so many people worry about the ball so much. The only I thing I think about when I hit a ball in a hazard is how it affects my score and how I can limit the damage, the fact that I may have lost a decent ball never crosses my mind.

You clearly don't lose balls like I do ;). I think my new balls have a homing signal in them to hit water...

To an earlier comment I certainly don't worry when I am over the ball I just choose to play a crappy ball when I am not swinging great.

That's a good attitude for your game and great if you don't lose many balls and/or can afford it. Someone else on a budget and who loses a lot of balls, wouldn't feel the same way, even though your approach makes sense.

I don't really bother, but don't tend to lose many balls and find more balls than I lose. I worry more about my score than the £1 balls I use. Not because I'm good, I just tend not to try and carry over water from tricky distances.

I wish I could find a few more distance balls instead of all these Pro V1's I keep finding though :)

I don't ever worry about loosing balls and rarely think about hazards unless I'm in one. I only use AD333 so that's maybe why and don't tend to loose to many. I also dont see any problem with it in a non competitive game. I've never noticed you do this though Dave.

Us high handicappers that lose lots of balls and cant afford to, need to take these things in consideration. I did not have any balls and went to the pro shop before T off, the selection of balls were thin as the delivery had been delayed for 2 weeks due to snow, the choice was pinnacle or pro v1 or pro v1x. Im not a pinnacle fan so decided to splash out on pro v1x. The wind was strong in my face over a water hazard. first shoot went up in the air and stayed there straight into water, 2nd shoot same again, 3rd i decided to drop down to a 5 iron from a 7 iron and hit a terrible slice into water, 4th i used a 6 iron and tried to hit it to hard and was concerned where it would end up and lifted my head up topped it into the water, 5th back to 7 iron wind caught it again water again, 6th after nearly throwing my club in the water to, i decided to use a 20 degree hybrid and smashed it, it went high wind caught it but was over the water and landed on the green about a foot away from the hole. what a wast of money wish i went to sports direct and bought donnay. thats why i use crap balls on hazards

If you really can't afford to lose the balls you use, buy cheaper balls. I can't afford to lose ProV1s, so I don't buy them. I buy whatever premium ball I can get cheap at the time I'm buying them (Z-stars for £20 for example) That way, I get a decent ball and I don't have to worry about the cost of losing them.

Just depends what I have in the bag mate. When I am broke after paying out a grand membership rocks are starting to appeal.
