The "best car" thread got me thinking about all the car's I've owned over the years as I tried to pick out a favourite. I chose my Astra, not only because it was a nuts flying machine, but because so much of my time and effort was invested in bringing it back from the dead.

Then I thought, jeez, I might have had a few cars. I passed my test in Dec 95, so been 25 years on the road. Got my first in June 95 in prep for passing. Saved for months to get it, a 1991 red Ford Fiesta XR2i. And I thought it was the business, thinking back, it was a lump of plastic inside :ROFLMAO:
Then I went on my journey; My list (I'm sure some of the more "vintaged" on here can surpass this by sheer volume of years :p)
The year at the start is the reg, not the year I bought it :D

1991 Ford Fiesta XR2i (loved it, nippy as hell for a n/a 1.6 engine)
1994 Ford Sierra Sapphire 1.8 (bought it from my then boss, lovely car but at 19 it was too expensive for me to run)
1995 Ford Escort Ghia 1.6 (genuinely thought I was the mutts nuts, leccy windows and mirrors, plush seats and a CD player, in truth it was a total bag of bolts).
1994 Rover 216GTi (ok, no idea what happened here, it was as shite as it sounds, kept it 2 months)
1993 Peugeot 205 1.9GTi (loved it until someone wrote it off while it was parked up)
1992 Ford Fiesta XR2 (thought I'd go old school, handled like a shopping trolley, got shot quick for more than I paid, they'd started becoming quite desirable to enthusiasts at that point)
2000 BMW E55 M3 (my first "near new" car, cost me a packet but I had a good job by now, even so at 25 I was struggling to run it, had it 6 months and it was gone)
2000 Vauxhall Astra 1.8 SRi (the car for me, piston rings blew in 2005 so engine was swapped out for a bigger unit (see best car thread) - I kept this car as a weekender until 2016 when it finally gave up the ghost.
2005 BMW 320cd M-Sport (my first foray in to German diesels lovely car and was only 2 years old when I bought it to run it as a daily alongside the Astra)
2008 Alfa Romeo GT 1.9jtd Cloverleaf (beautiful car, lovely to drive let down by poor mechanical design and poor reliability)
2010 Ford Focus ST (everybody was raving about them so got one and it was terrible. Engine, terrible, interior terrible, ride quality terrible... as you can guess, I found it terrible.
2014 Mercedes A220d (my first new car, and what a machine it was. It was lovely to drive and punchy when it needed to be. Badly damaged by a truck that failed to stop, my second parked up car to be hit).
2016 Mercedes C43 AMG Coupe (brilliant, just brilliant - just lacked a bit of boot space for the clubs)
2018 BMW 335d Touring (great size, not too bad looking but hated it, sterile unengaging drive couldn't wait to offload)
2020 BMW M340i (current car and my current love. Amazing car to drive with loads of room for a 3er or any family saloon for that matter. Metallic Orange just sets it aside as you don't see many of them)

So there, apologies for the text wall, but it seems I've been through a few cars over the years. 15 in 25 years...

So, what you all been through?

Passed my test in 2004 and I have had the Focus for 5 years now so went through cars pretty quickly early on. Wish I still had the 335d, but doing 20k miles a year in a car that did 33mpg wasnt great on the wallet.

50+ years of driving and 20+ cars plus the one's the wife had in that time. Some kept just weeks and others for more than 10 years
I am sure if I started to list then I would probable miss some (thinking of another one as I typed that).

First car was a 1938 Morris 8, the "sit up and beg" type.( Same shape as used by Eliot Ness ?)
No heater, vacuum wiper. etc. Bought for £10. The story of its demise is a bit spooky. But it was my "courting" car. Those were the days?

2014 - BMW 335i Luxury - only 3K on the clock when I bought it. Very fast with all the toys.

Compared to most guys here I am doing something totally wrong

1994 - Ford Fiesta (it was over 12 years old when I got it for 1000 DM; I paid more for repairs over the years)
1998 - Ford Ka (I won this in a cinema magazine where I had to predict the Oscars. It was the Titanic year and not too difficult)
2002 - no car as I moved to London
2007 - Ford Focus (still drive that one)

3 cars only since I got my license in 1992, all of them Ford. Twice by choice. Parents had 2 Sierra and a Mondeo, maybe nurture.

Na your just sensible

I regret spending as much as I did on cars

If I hadn't written off my civic I wouldn't of been forced to buy a colt

I'd of just waited and got that BMW so much more a gap with less spending

If I had thought about it more I'd of gone auto then so would never had to get rid of it and prob still driven it until the kids arrived

Had to switch to alhambra because of surprise twins

So luck played it's part

Yours is impressive

  1. Morris Marina, beige..............1987. Learnt to drive in this around 1987! Last seen kangarooing in a Sainsbury's car park!
  2. Ford Fiesta 1.1, black.............1988. Family car. Sprung an oil leak and was then difficult to sell!
  3. Ford Fiesta 1.1, red................1992. Lovely little motor. Did me proud for a good number of years.
  4. Subaru Impreza, red..............1997. My first new car. The excitement on day one! Great car. Had a decat exhaust. 205 bhp. Brilliant 0-60, but nothing beyond 80mph. Written off whilst parked up overnight by a drunk driver.
  5. Subaru Impreza STi, grey.......2003. Replaced the UK variant with this. Gold wheels! Remapped and decat exhaust - 320 bhp. Blew a turbo. Sold it as doing too many miles commuting.
  6. Audi A4, 1.9 TDi, black...........2007. Solid car with RS6 wheels. Had a Revo remap. Took up to 180k before it gave up.
  7. VW Polo, red.........................2008. Girlfriend => wife's car. Solid runner. Sad to see it go.
  8. Nissan QashQai, blue.............2010. Wife loved it. I didn't. Zero power and hard, harsh plastic interior.
  9. BMW 330d Touring, grey........2011. Lovely car, leather interior. Just too small. Damaged by the wife reversing out of the garage!
  10. Mini Cooper S, yellow.............2013. We both always wanted a yellow Mini. Black roof. Lovely car, nippy as anything. Run flats made the ride too hard. Growing kids meant it had to go.
  11. BMW 535d Touring, grey........2013. Disappointing initially with performance. A remap later - wow! Mid range was epic, second only to the RS6. Mileage eater, ultimately dull and not great in wet and useless in snow. Another car damaged by the wife.
  12. Seat Exeo estate, white..........2015. Rare car! Essentially a fully loaded A4 for Seat money. Really nice car.
  13. Nissan QashQai, black............2017. Revised QQ edition. Much better car. Still not enough power. Wife's current car.
  14. Audi A6 Avant, grey...............2017. Black Edition. 2.0 TDi. Beautiful looking car and lovely to drive. Faultless.
  15. Mercedes 350 SL, 1972, red....2019. My Dad's car. I took it over as he was too ill. A classic car but a money pit. Had to sell to a nice owner.
  16. Audi RS6 Avant, blue..............2020. Current and favourite car. Very rare Kingfisher Blue. My dream car and thanks to Dad's classic car sell, made it possible.
