Can anyone offer any advice on Algarve. I have never been to Portugal at all, and have no idea about resort choices.

I am looking for a good standard villa, but don’t rule out hotel, for wife and I, two daughters and two son in laws, one grandchild. All three males are golfers. I don’t think we would get away with an exclusive golf holiday. Rather a family holiday with squeezing in a couple games. Any advice would be most welcome

Myself and Mrs Woo visited Alvor twice last year. In Jan we stayed at the Le Meridian Penina 5* very good golf facilities but a few miles from the town.
Over xmas we stayed at the Dom Joa II 4* on the beach and a short walk to Alvor. Went with Golf escapes who were very good both times.
Alvor is a very nice, very old town, lots of cafes and bars, most of the bars are run by expat brits.
Lots of golf nearby.
I would assume that there are plenty of villas to rent in the region.

Father in law used to own a villa here: http://www.pestanagolf.com/Golf/gramacho-golf-algarve.html thoroughly recommend it for both family holiday and golf. They have 2 courses, both very good standard, about 1hr from faro and a ten minute drive to the beach at Carvoeiro which is a lovely little town (which is where the father in laws lap dancing club used to be!) I so miss the fact he has now sold it, but would go back paying full price no question!

Edit: go back and pay full price for the villa etc! Not the lap dancing club!

off there day after tomorrow playing Victoria, Old, O'Connor & Faldo. I realise this doen't help your decision just wanted to make everyone jealous.

I'll stick up a review of the courses & hotel when I get back.

Goin to Portugal next tues, staying at the villa gale mariner hotel at vilamoura. Stayed their last year but dont stay with wife and kids, not very good but great restaurants etc all around.
Last September we played villa sol ,Laranjal and oceanica victoria, next week we play vale do lobo.oceanica old course and oceanica laguna. We are booked with your golf travel.com ,last year it was golf breaks.Of the courses that we played last year i really liked villa sol and laranjal, the fairways were cut so tight at victoria for the Portuguese open the following week,i found it too difficult.

Been a few times to Quinta do Lago and some nice courses around the area, including the North & South course. Vale do Lobo is great and close by.

Really good beach there if the family are going.

Plenty of places to stay like Vilar do Golf and Four Season Fairways which will also get you heavy discou ts for the local courses

Played Laranjal three years aho, not long after it opened. Used a buggy but I wish I had walked as pretty flat. Some of the greens hadn't bedded in but I'm sure they will have by now!

I'm staying at the Tivoli Carvoiero in May. It's an excellent hotel which we have used about 8 times and have never been disappointed. They have cut-price golf green fees there, for most of the Algarve courses. I've played both Quinta do Lago courses, Palmares, Penina, Vila Sol, all the Vilamoura courses and many others and they are all good. You won't be disappointed with any of them.

As far as the family are concerned, you won't find a better hotel for pools and children's entertainment. The scenery and the cuisine is superb.

The Old course is fantastic. We played it last September, enjoyed it that much we cancelled Laguna to play it again.

You'll have a great time!

Old course was my favourite (we also played Laranjal, Vila lobo south and north and la quinta north and south), but at 120 euros a round - its a tad steep! its not a 120 euro course. we played it on a twilight fee - half price and only just got in before dark.

I'd play it again - if someone else was paying. 4th hole was my fave - short par 3 with a bunker, lake and big tree to negotiate.

No, that was the competition, that one was dodgy as ... run by some russian mafia so i am told.... his was at the bottom of the hill, right at the cafe at the bottom and along about 50yrds, was called "safari" and was a bit like that some nights! great craic though, being in there and not being mugged off by the girls!

Know it well! It even had karaoke on!

Vilamoura Old is a pleasant enough course, but in my opinion not that special. San Lorenzo is a much better course, and Palmares is worth a look after the update. If you can travel an hour, Monte Rei is something special.
