Came across this on TikTok of all places! Don’t judge me I had a TikTok account to track what guff my kids post and turns out it’s pretty good for course reviews and other bits!

There is a guy on there KnappGPT, he’s input his golf swing video to ChaptGPT and asked it to give him a full training plan on how to rebuild his swing based on Jake Knapps. The app has a done a full analysis and given him structured training plans, drills and suggested videos, the few reels I’ve seen he’s made some progress so far.

It got me wondering in this Information Age and how so many people gorge on YouTube content for swing tips, advice etc will we see more people try and use the likes of ChatGPT, Gemini etc to get golf instruction to save a few quid especially as it can do video analysis on your own swing for free.

Just for giggles I’ve put my swing into Gemini to see what it suggested, I must say it was complimentary as to who it said I resemble but ironically it did pick up a flaw I have in my swing that causes me to be a poor driver of the ball and something I’ve battled with for years. I’m not saying I’m going to use it to rebuild my swing as it doesn’t need major overhaul but it was good to get confirmation of what flaw I do have and suggested drills to prevent it.

I've been using ChatGPT this year for golfing advice. Haven't put any videos in, but I input stats and swing data and ask it for recommendations and what I need to work on. It suggested my putting wasn't good enough for the next level, which is one of the reasons I changed to the pencil grip. All club tweaks and changes I run past it as well.

I took a new swing video today so maybe I'll put that in as well and see what it says.

I’m intrigued what have you been inputting for stat analysis and in what format does it give it back to you with breakdowns etc.

I was quite impressed with what it did for my swing today, who it compared it to and what it thought is wrong with my driver swing. So much so I will put the drills in tomorrow at the range to see what happens as that has been mr car crash since my return.

I’d be interested to see what it says with yours and how you find it.

wasnt there a guy on here a couple of weeks ago canvassing opinions on a prospective app that would give swing advice based on a video of your swing?

Weirdly that appears right below this thread as a suggested similar one. I never bothered reading that because it essentially already exists at top level coaching and at our level clearly AI apps can already do it.

I just started this as I thought it was interesting the guy isn’t doing just analytics on his swing he’s doing a complete rebuild from the ground up just using ChatGPT as his coach.

It's not hugely in-depth stuff. Things like greens in reg, fairways hit, number of putts etc and asking it how they compare to a single figure handicapper, and which metric needs most improvement. Then I might put in my swing numbers like club speed, launch angle etc and ask it regarding the tweaking of loft on my clubs what is likely to work the best. Basically anything I've tinkered with so far this year I've asked ChatGPT first to see if it's worth doing.

I've realised now I can't put videos into it though, only photos. Maybe I would need the premium version for that or something.

Interesting I may have a look into that data analysis side of things save me a lot of time working on my own stats. Simply record what I do and let AI do the working out I like it.

Download Google Gemini, it’s far better than ChatGPT, it’s completely free and you can upload video for full analysis and there is no limit of usage per day unlike ChatGPT.

I’ve been using ChatGPT for general info related to my swing numbers for a couple of months now. It started off after a range session where I was comparing 2 different driver shafts. I gave it some numbers from my launch monitor, asked what my max distances could be based on those and based on a pro v1x ball etc etc, dispersion, which shaft was the best fit and it came back with what seems like useful info.

I’ve since asked it things like which ball suits my swing, whether I should get rid of my 7 wood and other similar things that I’d normally mull over in my own mind!

Taking it with a large pinch of salt, but it’s an interesting thing to do.

I’ll definitely give Gemini a go because I too couldn’t upload my swing video to ChatGPT.

I might do, but it would also be a shame as ChatGPT now has stored knowledge about my game from all the previous info I've put in, whereas a new app would have none of that.

In all fairness, ChatGPT is clearly programmed to give quite positive answers so more often than not I think it just convinces me to do what I wanted to do anyway. Sometimes it does subtly suggest that the thing I'm wanting to try will not make a positive difference though.

As AI struggles to decipher what goes on at meetings and to provide a meaningful transcript, something complicated like a golf swing must really tax it.

If AI can't get a simple rules question correct - the OB one we had a few months back - then I wouldn't trust it to give me the time of day let alone advice on golf.

And there's still not enough people who have seen Terminator...

I asked Gemini for swing analysis and it was useless. It said I was overswinging, despite there being no evidence of that at all in the video I sent!

However, I realised I can send it to ChatGPT via a YouTube link. The answer was very long so I'll summarise only:

It said 'what was good' first and mentioned backswing length (ironic given what I got from Gemini), tempo and balance. Good start then.

It said main issue is "club getting a touch 'out in front' in transition". Then an out-to-in path, which I already knew of course.
What could be causing it:
1. Arms start down before lower body clears enough.
2. Handle works slightly out toward the ball.

Simple feel to fix it:
1. 'Hands drop, not throw.'
2. Back to target a fraction longer.
3. Headcover/towel drill (outside the ball).

That vaguely kind of makes sense, but it's the thing I've always struggled with in all fairness, so not sure if I'll be able to remedy it with those feels alone. Interesting though, and I would say it was pretty much on the button.

Goes to show how each AI app is still learning and works for some not others.

It did a really accurate analysis of mine and even picked up my lateral shift/sway I have at the start of my swing and cusses me to let my hands get to inside on the takeaway when I’m not swinging well especially as issue with driver. Suggested some really good drills on how to correct etc, whereas it look at you and went nope no idea 😂

True the drills yesterday and today on the range, definitely can see the improvement when it is done properly but it’s an issue I’ve always had and why I’ve always been inconsistent with the driver.

I haven’t got a swing uploaded on YouTube maybe I could do that and compare the 2 see if there is any similarities in it’s analysis or if it’s completely different. Not sure I want to open my swing to that ridicule and let people here or elsewhere see it 😂

Be interesting if you could get it to deep dive those “feels” and suggest actual drills to correct it. Though it’s a big can of worms !

I use Claude and Perplexity. I asked Claude to act as my golf coach and get me to single figures, told it about my age, fitness, handicap and how often I play. Gave it my course setup (yardages, stroke index etc) and my last 100 rounds (just the hole scores). It gave me a two page word document that summarised where I was leaking shots, where I should push, a hole by hole strategy. Did it tell me anything I didn't fundamentally already know? Probably not, but for me it is an exercise in learning the tools on a topic I understand. I will probably do some GIR, putting stats and the like too. If nothing else it makes me think about my game from a different perspective, and reinforces the good habits I know I should use (rescue rather than driver on a couple of holes and stuff like that).
