England got stuffed by the Germans, but frankly I don't care!

30-odd years after taking the game up (okay, I had a 10 year break in the middle somewhere), I finally achieved my goal of winning a board competition at the weekend.

We played in glorious sunshine, with the course in great nick and set up really quite tough for our Captain's Day. All the tees were way back, the second cut knee high and thicker than you would believe, and some of the pins were really nasty.

For once I managed to hit almost every fairway (I think I missed only two of fourteen), and having done so I then went on to behave most out of character. I engaged my previously missing in action golfing brain.

Rather than attack pins I went for the middle of the green and relied on my putting, and went on to hole out really well.

A gross 78 for 41 points, a handicap reduction which puts me in touching distance of single figures, and a bit of silverware to boot.

I haven't stopped grinning like an idiot for 72 hours!

Great news mate. I've won a honours board event this year for the first time since 2000 (well HTL did the work) and I keep looking at where my name will be!. Great shooting especially on such a tough layout. Keep it going now and it won't be so long next time

Great shooting Billysboots!

Captains Day - tough course set up and winning the board competition, it doesn't get any better than that!

Keep that brain in gear and a single figure handicap beckons!

Golfmmad.

well doneBillysboots - good shooting in a mjor with a tough set up. I got my name up there in the handicap knockout a couple of years ago but it took a 6-month wait before they actually put it on the board! Kocked out in the first round last year but still in this year - round 3 Sunday.

Your golfing brain tells you to find a club in your bag that can hit the fairway with.
You then aim for the middle of the greens
You have a good day putting.
The rest of the field didn't stand a chance because.....
They were hitting driver all over the place, therfor if they did find their ball, they couldn't reach the green, therefor chipping and 2 putts later, another bogey.
Well played and congratulations on the H/cap chop but ssshhhhh, dont tell anyone your secret. :)

Thanks guys - what made it so sweet was that last year my wife was unwell and had to have a very major op towards the end of the year. For the whole year my mind was elsewhere and the only relief I got from it was on the course, but my game was in ruins to the point I almost packed up altogether.

Now she's fit and well again, I've had a promotion at work, and all of a sudden I can hit a golf ball.

Ain't life grand?!

:)
