Advice for buying Lake balls...

Actual lake balls can be a risk as there is no knowing how long they have been submerged. But you can buy "found" balls, ones that have supposedly not been dunked!
A couple of weeks underwater will probably have little effect, a couple of months probably a bit more.
To all those who shy away from lake/found balls I ask this...
If you find a seemingly new ProV1 in the rough, are you going to use it? If so how do you know its not a lake ball that has been submerged for months before being cleaned..?
I'm not convinced that most lake balls differ significantly from new ones once the new ones have been hit a few times.......
Refuge, though, are a different kettle of fish!

And the concept that balls degrade noticeably when submerged for even quite long periods is a myth too!

Not according to the guys at Titleist when asked the question

I used to buy lake balls, but with a lot of companies producing cheaper game-able balls I wouldn't bother.

When I'm feeling poor and in need of balls, sports direct do 2 boxes of 12 Srixon Distance balls for £16.

Unless you know how long they have been in, don't. Good evidence they degrade after only a few weeks. Better to buy a new mid market ball.

Show me this evidence? I use them and have never had any issues, but if there is actually evidence to the contrary I would reconsider.

My course has water on about 5 holes, 3 par 3's have water directly in front of or to the side of the green. 1 ball is not going to last 3 rounds around that course unless you are a very good golfer and I am not that person. I'd love to keep a ball long enough to watch it degrade. Lake balls for me. You never know, I may get some of my own back :D

it would be easier to stay in Hoebridge :) hardly lost a ball there.. Bleeping too many hazards at Merrist :) The course setup does not suit my game...

It will after a few months. I started with 3 cards over 105...

BTW, went round in my handicap at Hoebridge over the weekend. So it must be easier!

Well done.. I can see why Hoebridge will feel 'easier' now. Dont need to worry about which tier you land the ball in or about putting it in the drink or bunker somewhere. Last 3 rounds at MW have been under 100 for me despite losing 3-4 balls.. so improving a bit. We will see how the S/F goes this weekend.

Still need to get some lake/refurb/Found balls..

We had some time on the 15th at Hoebridge and we went into the thick stuff on the right of the hole (it's OOB right?) and managed to rake aout about 12 balls between 3 of us.

Maybe take a trip there??? ;)

On the 15th, the thick on the right (before the bunker) is not OOB and is a good place for foraging as all slicers end up there. I think the right is OOB after the Bunker - it is the place where they get some of the turf from - and continues all the way to the hole. It is a long P4 from the back tees.
