With the spread of sky + and the ability to pause live TV, do you think the companies that use TV to advertise their products are wasting their money?
And do you watch them?

If I'm watching something, I'll always pause it at the start so I can FF the adverts.
"Because you're worth it"...my ****

Don't let the secret out bob... if the companies find out no-one watches their adverts then they'll stop making them and then the programmes that they appear in will cease to be and you'll not be able to sky + anything!

;)

Does anyone actually buy anything on the strength of the ads anyway?
Can't say I've ever gone " Oooh! I know I'll rush out and buy some Cillit Bang as I want my hands to melt"

Are you wearing a tie though? I'm sure that's what clinched it for him!

One advert that does raise a smile (sadly) is the new Microsoft Bing adverts. They are funny in their own little way. (I've still not used the search engine tho')

About 97% of people who watch TV dont have sky + and sure I'd say quite a lot of the people who have sky+ watch the ads anyway
I think ads work anyway, the whole point of them is to get people to know the brand name. Like if you had a choice between two brands of coke that were the same price and taste, one was coca cola and the other was...smoka jola (i made it up) which one would you pick?
Most likely coca cola :D

I don't see the issue with the ads.. it gives me time to make a cuppa/go to the loo/or quickly check the forum :)

They have been the same for years, I don't see the need to change the system. Do I care if the ads are effective or not? Not really, but I have probably bought a lot of products that HAVE been advertised on the tele.

Ads don't bother me with regular half hour or hour shows but they really bug me when watching a movie almost to the point that if the film is on an ad channel (ITV, Channel 4 etc) I won't watch it. A movie needs to be sat through from start to finish to create the emotional state the director intends. If you're watching Hannibal Lecter, caught up in the tension, to be suddenly faced with some jingly advert every 20 minutes selling fairy liquid or whatever just destroys the viewing experience.

I hate adverts especially in the middle of a film so tend to watch all mine on DVD or Sky film channels. At least we're still nowhere near as bad as the US. I don't think its about going out and purchasing straight away but all about product placement, subliminal messaging I believe its called.

It's a case of finding the right advert.

I am continually searching for a putting aid that will help me take my wrists out of the stroke and encourage me to rock my shoulders. Can't seem to find one of them anywhere on TV!! :D

The very fact that we're discussing these adverts here , with punchlines , tunes and tags that we can all almost recite off by heart , seems to prove the point that adverts are sticking in our subconscience and therefore doing their jobs !

Do you know ho www. much a T V-easy advert costs? .co.uk
Thats part of my point, think of the money these companies must be making to afford all the adverts.

I'm sure there are loads of times when advertising has worked so well I started buying the product without thinking about it. ( Looking back, maybe Walkers Crisps increased their market share after they started using Ol' Big Ears - before that wasn't it Golden Wonder all the way? )

But there's at least one time when advertising has worked in the opposite way. During an England tour of the Windies back in the '90s the main sponor was Gillete, and they had a series of adverts played every time there was a break between overs, let alone when a wicket fell. I vowed never to buy their product again, and I never have.

adverts in the middle of films are irritating. what's worse though is that these are pre-recorded programmes, they aren't live - so why the hell can't the programmers fit the ads into the natural breaks. instead, almost invariably, you get a scene change, 30 seconds of action/dialogue and then a bloody ad. does it really matter if the ad break is taken 30 sec early or late - or are they all just bone idle and stupid?

I was watching a film on ITV a while back when half way through the film they had a wee break for the news followed by the local news, followed by the local weather followed by the national weather, then the normal adverts......all in all just over an hour
By the time it started again, I'd forgotten what I was watching. Maybe it's just my age
