I don't know the exact science but this sounds about right to me.According to Gareth Raflewski, who is coach to several PGA/LPGA players, if the ball is travelling fast enough to go 1 foot past the hole then the effective size of the hole shrinks to just over 2 1/2 inches..if its going 2 feet past the hole shrinks to just under 2 inches and at 3 feet past it's the size of the ball....
