Hi all,

New to the forum and thought id throw out a question that's been confusing me.

I regularly shoot between 88-92 on two 72 par courses and use the Golfcard application on the iphone to keep track of my progress.
I have always assumed these scores would mean i play off about 18!
Although i have never obtained a proper handicap certificate (i know i should) the application works out your handicap and states mine would be 13.4!
My card has a variety of scores included the occasional treble bogey.
Is the 13.4 after trebles have been deducted? and if so, can i correctly assume that's my handicap?

thanks for any help

:D

If you do not currently hold a handicap certificate, your club (if you are a member of one) will judge your ability from three cards marked by another member. For the sake of obtaining an official handicap for a new golfer, those three cards will be scrutinised and a certain amount of leeway will be applied where you have double/triple bogeyed or worse, depending on the stroke index of those holes. It is up to the handicap committee's discretion to determine where your gross score may deserve reduction.

In general, once you have an official handicap, your gross score less official handicap will apply when determining future adjustments to your current handicap. There are exceptions, but to trust your ipod golf score calculator to give you an accurate assessment of a predicted handicap would be misplaced.

Just to add, the handicap system administered in Great Britain, by the Council of National Golf Unions (CONGU) differs to that in the United States, who include course and slope rating figures to an amateurs personal handicap calculation. It may be that the golf app on your phone is derived from the usga handicap system.

Just to correct that a bit. There is no leeway when playing for handicap, all scores greater than 2 over par on any hole will be rounded down to two over par for handicap purposes.

This also applies in all counting competitions once you have gained a handicap. Although you must of course complete every hole when playing in a strokeplay comp, for handicap purposes, again anything over +2 on any hole will be rounded down to +2.

The stroke index of a hole has no impact on these adjustments.

Echtloon,
Thankyou for correcting my reply. Looks like I should brush up on the rules and think think twice before posting incorrect advice. I'm sorry if I've misled anyone as I myself would prefer no advice rather than wrong advice.
