A suggestion please?

Dear Forum members,

I am planning a trip to Scotland next year to play a weeks golf. I am driving up with my friends from Sussex. Our route will be - M25, M40, M6, M74 etc. We are looking for a course to play on route, to a) break up the journey and b) kick off the holiday. Last time we did this, we played Southerness GC, quite near Dumfries and had a great time.

Can anyone suggest a course which would be worth playing not far - ie not too much of a detour - from the proposed route? Something north of Manchester would be ideal. Many thanks in advance for any advice or suggestions people may have.

The obvious suggestion is one of the Southport courses as long as it is not too much of a detour for you. Of those, I would strongly recommend Hillside. It is an absolutely superb course with one of the best back 9's in the UK.

If that is too far West then I can recommend the Portal in Tarporley. It is a nice course and you would be able to get a good deal too.

Hillside GC north of Liverpool and right next door to Royal Birkdale. Fantastic course. We played it last year on the way back down from St. Andrews. Greg Norman apparently said that the back 9 is the best in the country.

Silloth. A lot cheaper than the golf coast courses around Birkdale, and a superb test.

Thanks guys who have repied so far - I have played Birkdale, Lytham, Hoylake, Siloth and Hillside and others in that area. However, a good shout. If no-one else has any ideas, a revisit may happen.!!!

Lancaster, only about 20 odd mins off the M6, a mate used to be a member, cracking course.

Why are you coming up the M6/M74? If you come up the East Coast you will have a fantastic number of courses almost adjacent to the A1

We have done it both ways (east and west) and M6/M74 seems quicker

Depending on how much you want to pay, i'm only 4 miles from J20 of the M6 and i'll happily host you at my club. If you wanted to play a grander course a bit further north then you cant go wrong with Hillside or Formby, 2 of the finest in the land !!!!

Would also highly reccommend , Mere GC, www.themereresort.co.uk (The Wentworth of the North as they like to call it) and Wychwood Park in Crewe

Take a look at Brampton, it's only 15 mins off the Carlisle jct on the m6.
Other than that I'd go straight to Silloth.

It's a great course and has hosted open qualifying for the last couple of years. It's always in fanasic condition and it does take 2 fore 1's on certain days.
