At the weekend I regripped a set of MP30s that I'd been using at the nets at my club. They'd languished in my locker for a while and the original grips had started to perish.

I bought a new set of grips from Gamola and at the weekend I set about regripping the set myself. Oh, I've done the odd driver grip and changed a putter grip or two and last year regripped my daughters half set. But this was the first time I'd done my own full set of irons.

I was out the back of the garden before dark this evening playing a few shots with the Pitching Wedge and 9 Iron. Boy did the new grips feel good.

It is certainly a straight forward task if you've got the gear to hand and the sense of satisfaction is something else when you give them a whirl.

nice one well done :D, i wouldnt dare cos knowing my luck i would just wreck them and it would cost me twice as much to get it sorted than if i would have just paid for it in the first place. :D

It's a suprisingly quick and easy job isn't it. What solvent did you use to take the stick off the tape? I found nail varnish remover (acetone) is the best if you're careful not to get it on any paintwork/logos but I think certain window cleaners work too.

It's an easy job if all the preperation is done properly. I stripped off the old grips and cleaned the shafts, put on the new tape on all the shafts before setting about puting on the new grips. I used white spirit as the solvent and it worked fine.

Lined up the grips and then left them to dry overnight.

Might even do my 'real' set of irons this winter.

I enjoy re gripping clubs esp as you can buy the grips online and save £30-40 re doing a set of irons with multi compounds

One tip to get the old grip tape off is use a heat gun what you use for wallpaper

A couple of seconds on the tape and it just peels off

There's a coincidence! I have just bought an ancient set of Wilson irons and am now waiting for the grips to arrive in the post. I bought the old clubs in order to practice with a heavier swing weight as my iron play has been so terrible.
I have never re-gripped clubs before so I am looking forward to an interesting experience.

andi (and happy birthday),

how do you save that much on grips? I had 8 irons and two wedges regripped by the proshop and it cost me £5/club including the grips. 10 clubs - £50 (Ping Midsize).

I spent some time this afternoon doing my first bit of re-gripping. Messed up on one which I might do again. What a fiddle it is getting the new grip to go on. I saw a tool for making this bit simple and I will get one if I am going to do much more of this.

TWM,

If you've applied enough white spirit or whatever to the tape and then liberally sloshed (technical term) the inside of the new grip there should be no problem slipping the grip onto the end of the shaft.

I used a plastic milk carton cut in half, top to bottom, to catch all my thinner/spirit as I wet the tape. I then put a liberal amount into the grip to slosh it about before tipping it into the milk carton for use on the next grip.

That sounds a tried and tested method. The point is valid though in that you need to make sure you use a liberal amount to make sure the grip slides on easily and can be adjusted to line up correctly

Thank you for that tip. I managed to lose quite a bit of spirit.

Hold the club horizontaly in a vice with rubber jaws (tape already on) put you finger over the hole on the end of your new grip fill with plenty of solvent and slosh around. Then pour straight from grip, over the tape on your club using a half plastic milk carton underneath to catch excess.

Simples ;)
