A friend of mine asked me this last night and to be honest I am not sure of the answer.

He was playing in a 4 ball better ball matchplay last weekend, and should have recd a shot on a certain hole.

Anyway he scored a par as did his best scoring opponent, (hence he should have won the hole due to his shot recd) however during the match the hole was marked as drawn and they moved on to the next hole.

At the end of the match which I believe was the next hole when on the green the card was checked and the mistake realised (however by this time they had shaken hands) and effectively lost the match (1 down).

Although the match was technically drawn, what is the ruling.

I believe that once you've shaken hands and finished the match that is pretty much that and it was his responsibility to point out the error, is this correct?

I believe you have to identify the mistake before you tee off on the next hole or else it's too late. In this instance his team remains defeated 1 down.

I'm entrigued clubchamp - how would this scenario result in 2 shot penalty or dq in strokeplay?

Strokeplay - doesn't matter if the player is getting a shot or not, as long as the player marks down the correct Gross score they are fine.

Stableford - same as above - it is not the players responsibility to count the right number of points, as long as the gross indicator is correctly entered they are fine.

We've all fallen into this one. As far as I'm concerned, if you don't call in the stroke at the time, it can't be retrospectively allowed.

The sportsmanly result would be to forgo the shot and accept it either way.

I've forgotten on countless times to call in a stroke (especially when you only get 1 or 2 shots).

Don't know about official rules though.

correct me if I'm picking this point up wrong but i gather that in matchplay if you have a shot you must claim it on the tee of the hole you get the shot. It's no good waiting till 2 - 3 holes later and saying oh btw I had a shot 3 holes ago so that makes me 1 up. Maybe I've got the wrong end of the story here but thats what it sounds like to me.

no - i wasn't querying your matchplay ruling - that was bang on. It was when you said in strokeplay there's penalty that has got me wondering...

In matchplay, the state of the match has a direct effect on the type of strategy employed. If you are 2 up with 2 to play, you are then not taking any risks and you are simply playing to halve a hole. Equally so, if you are in the reverse situation then risk taking must be the name of your game. It is therfore very important to know the state of a matchplay game at all times, and you can't have a player or a team springing a surprise unclaimed stroke on you. The stroke must be claimed at the time, and certainly before you tee off on the next hole, or before you leave the final green.
