After posting yesterday about joining my new club, I get an email this morning. This was a formal invite to a little competition to allow new members to meet each other and the committee. At no cost to us they are putting on bacon rolls and coffee, then a 9 hole competition followed by drinks and a prize giving.

I thought that this was a really good way of integrating new members into the club and allowing them to meet a few playing partners before the season starts the following week.

Looking more and more like I have made the right decision.

I've had my differences with Steve (club manager) in the past (outside of the golf club - my family has known his family for years) but he's the best thing that ever happened to that golf club. It's stuff like this which makes it the club it is today.

10 or 15 years ago it was a stuffy, clique-y members club and unless you were over 40, weren't considered worthy of being on the course. Now, it's friendly, has great facilities and stuff like this. Total winner.

Hi all, I'm new on here but just thought I would pop my head in on the top thread and it's a good un as my club does the same for new members too and I think it's such a nice thing for new members to be made to feel welcome :0)

Hopefully see you all round the boards.

Welcome along mate. Start a thread and introduce yourself, let us know a bit about you. I see you have impeccable taste in golf clubs, which is a good start! ;)

Thanks Aztec. I will start a wee introductory thread in a moment.
Gotta love Mizuno for their sheer craft and quality (although I do have that TM interloper in there, but that's my "magic wand" that is so it's staying for now :D)

Having just joined Hockley Golf Club, I got an email inviting me to a similar event. Great idea. A bit gutted I can't make it as the date is when our 1st baby is due!

Nice touch indeed Greg sounds like a good club .. i remember my first ever club , i had submitted my 3 score cards for a handicap . the handicap sec reang me to thank me for such honest card (think i got 12.5 or something) then he offered to put my name down with his the following sunday , i accepted , he introduced me to the Captain , club sec, bar staff etc , Captain put our names down for the following weekend (i thought we would have goten 1st tee priority ) Its very nice touch & i hope you are happy at the new club

Is a good idea.

All too often (and not just in golf perhaps) the "nice touches" stop the minute you're committed to handing over your cash.

Our place is having a whole weekend for new members this weekend. Free coaching & lessons, comps both days where new members are being paired with existing members and loads if information about the club/comps/swindles etc.

Should be good, looking forward to meeting some of the newbies on Saturday.

The same happens at my club I was in fact invited last year before I'd even signed up, was great as new to the area not knowing anyone in the club got a whole host of numbers and playing pArtners.
hope all works out well a good start!

Things like this were really what I was looking for in my new club, an effort to integrate new members rather than taking their money and leaving them to it.

Try and find the logic in this, my old club had a new members comp, it was held at the end of the season at the same time as a comp for all members so what happened, everyone stuck in their same groups and nobody met anyone new plus, by that time the new members had endured a season of scratching around for a game. Hopeless.

My club has open days where prosepctive new members can meet the captain, view the facilities and play nine holes with a member of the committee or board. Proving a good way of getting people in. Once you join we have a new meber social evening where again you can meet some more of the "faces" such as the steward, bar staff, social organiser etc. We have regular roll ups thorughout the week and at weekends and new members are actively encouraged to join in and meet members. As our medals and stablefords are drawn they get to meet new faces in comps too

Clubs around my area seem to have an aleargy to roll ups so that is why these things are important. Still, this club at least listens so I will make some suggestions.
