Evening all,
I had what can only be described as my worst round of golf since i joined the club today......V par comp and went around in 105
I usually shoot in the mid 80's but i just couldnt get going today....
I never gave in and struggled all the way round taking 5's on par 3's 7,8's on par 4's just an all round MARE!

I need a little advice on how to slow things down without loosing tempo....Today i Air Mailed so many greens i actually got mad with myself something i never do.....

I was hitting PW's and 9i's from 140,150 mtrs and still too long im too scared to hit sand wedges off the hard fairways........I know the clubs are new and im not blaming them i just want some consistency.....Is there any drills or tips for taking distance off clubs without going down the grip.....I feel that when i try to slow down everything falls out of place and i start thinning and fatting shots....

The only thing i can take good out of today was my driving off the tee with my 3 wood.....Everything else went wallop.

Sorry for the rant :(

Have you tried a 3/4 swing. I don't mean 3/4 power, but only swinging back to about 10 o'clock with your arms then the same length follow through.
It takes about 10% off my clubs.

I havent really Region....I do it with my PW from 100 mtrs and thats 4" down the grip.....
Its just getting so frustrating now not knowing what club to take.....I know lots of players are mad for distance I would do literally anything to go the other way.......I want accuracy at any cost!

I had thought of hitting all my clubs with my feet together for a full round...I read this somewhere that if i do this tempo and speed will quiten and if i overswing ill loose balance....But im not sure this is the answer.... :D

Try hitting less club off the tee?

Hi Murph and Homer.....
I also tried that today........I hit a 3 hybrid off our 459 mtr Par 5 6th..The hole plays uphill all the way to a slightly elevated green. I put it straight in the fairway with a slight following breeze..... 2nd shot was a full PW too a tree right in the middle of the fairway which is exactly 110mtrs from the centre of the green..... 3rd shot i pulled out my 52 deg wedge and sailed it past the green into high rough....Lost ball...had to walk back and replay a 2nd picked out my PW went 4 in down the grip and plonked it on the green

Maybe I'm missing something.

Do you need to measure how far you hit your clubs again?

Since you've changed irons, each club now goes further but you've still got your old distances in your head?

If you're hitting it well I wouldn't change (slow down) your swing, just learn your new distances :)

Forget it! Everyone has bad days, the more you chase a score on these days, the worse score you'll get as you'll try to hard!! Find the problem you had, work on it at the range, and forget the round!

Have you got a skycaddie?

No J.
Funds dont permit one im afraid.......
I suppose im going to do it the old fashioned way arent I....I think i hit my 8 iron around 150mtrs Its definately not less but maybe where im messing up is that im adding 10mtrs for each club up or down...Is a 10 mtr gap between clubs right or wrong....?

Yeh, 10mtrs is OK gapping.

I think you need to learn your yardages with each club and a skycaddie is perfect for doing that.

A few thoughts going through my head as im sitting here....

Clubs have strong lofts!
Srixon AD333 balls( although soft are distance balls )!
Warm temperatures hard fairways and greens and wind!

Equals a MARE!!!!!! :D

When you say you're hitting too far, is it flying over the green or bouncing on and running through?

A bit of both Region.....Happened on a few holes.... I think that because i hit my 8 Iron normally from 150 mtrs that i always use this as my base....And then im second guessing myself as to whether i havent enough club in my hand or not if i need a 9 or a wedge...

Our 8th is a par 3 130 mtrs..... So tonight i take a 9 Iron and swing smooth......It air mails the green so i hit a provisional and this time take a PW and this ends up about 15 mtrs pin high at the back of a 2 tier green with a down hill putt....This green has water in front also so i dare not take a 52 deg wedge......

I have a gap wedge ordered for my set which is 49 deg so im hoping this will lesson my dilemma slightly.....

Too many Weetabix.

Simples. :D

Bad luck.....you'll get a feel of it all in no time.

Hopefully Dave...I felt very disheartened today.....But i never threw in the towel so its something positive to take i suppose.....In fairness my putting was bad as well so my Iron play cant take all the blame.......

Sounds to me very much like you need to be learning from things like this. Why don't you try taking a notepad with you and write down the result of each shot and over time you'll build up an accurate yardage for each club. Then you need to practice 3/4 and grip down swings to fill the gaps. The important distance is carry distance as bounce and roll can be inconsistent so to a certain degree you are guessing and it makes big difference if you pitch off or on the green. You could always get over to a local field and practice if you want to speed the process up but you need something to measure your shots.

I have been noting yardages with all my clubs for the last few months and now have a pretty accurate picture of carry distances for all my clubs and also the approximate roll I get if I land on the green. I have this for 1/4, 1/2, 3/4 & full swings for my 9 iron and all 4 wedges.

It's not an exact science by any means but it does take a lot of the guesswork out of it.

There's no quick answer I'm afraid.

I had an odd game ages ago at an Open Q course. Suddenly, out of nowhere I was either way short or over the back of greens. It had me stressed for a few days afterwards but I always figure off our handicaps you/we ought to be able to still make a decent score short and/or long. Maybe not pars, but plenty of safe bogeys. The worst two holes that day (sadly it was medal) were ruined by course management not inconsistent distances....mostly being too greedy....

I think ill head to a local field during the week and try figure out my carry distances at least then that will be one problem off my mind....Next will be my short game.....At the moment my short game's pathetic.......
