I was at a demo night yesterday and came away from it slightly sceptical of the c/f process. When i arrived i was given a club to warm up with, a G15 7i stiff shaft which kept going left but i knew it was down to the shaft flex,oh and it looked awful at address, it was now my turn to go on the trackman and have my swing analysed, I was measured up then the questions, handicap 27, how far do you hit a 7i, about 175 yards, what a 7i, yes, this sort of got my back up straight away, he then said i needed a V2 Rapture standard length and lie and i hit some balls flight was ok average length 168 Yards swing speed 86 mph. After a while he put the tape on the sole and i hit a few more the result were fine and i was told that i needed a 3 to s/w told my pro this who seemed very surprised wit the choice of clubs, i was then aske to hit some more balls with a bigger grip this time an i15 6 i, the next shot were peaches and this was commented on by the fitter and the pro i said they felt more comfortable when i swung at the ball to which the reply was i wont give you those as you won't be able to hit them. With this in mind i proceded to venture of home feeling very dispondant with the whole process as what he was basically saying was buy of the shelf and work on your swing.

Trouble is he has probably seen a million guys who come in, get fitted to a set of clubs, and then 3 weeks later they are back saying they can't hit them. He has to go with h/cap as a pointer, even if you are hitting the less GI clubs well at the time. On average, he would expect you to hit the raptures better.

As an aside, clearly length isn't an issue with your game, so what keeps you off 27?

Demo nights are there to shift gear, not to do detailed fittings, so I wouldn't count that as a custom fitting. And to be fair, most 27 handicaps don't hit a 5 iron 175, let alone a 7 iron.

Still, you have a good swing speed, 86 mph for a 7 iron, and 170 is very good distance. In my opinion, no 27 handicapper, and few double digit handicappers, need a 3 iron, and a hybrid and 4-W would probably be better.

As for the irons, I think that is largely a style preference. Rapture will be more forgiving, but the length, lie, shaft flex and grip size are likely to be the same for both.

I would be a bit careful about custom fitting when just starting.
when I started with a 28hc I was feeling a bit flush so went out and bought new clubs and had them custom fit. Over the next 12 months I learned to play the game had a few lessons and my swing became unrecognisable from when I started. The custom fit clubs became a block to me improving. I ended up scrapping my clubs and switching to what I now use, standard loft standard lie.

And to be fair, most 27 handicaps don't hit a 5 iron 175, let alone a 7 iron.

Alot of people dont hit a 7i that far. bloody hell who did the guy think he was fitting big J Daly?

As most know I am a demo day veteran and love the whole experience but only partake on my own terms. I usually know what makes and model I want to try and to a certain degree what specs. I usually hit a small bucket with my own clubs so my swing is warmed up and I'm hitting as I would do normally.

I will have a general chat with the guy running it and explain what I'm looking for and why. Usually in my experience they are fairly receptive to people who have a proper understanding of what they want and their own limitations and accpet that they must see hundreds of 28 handicappers wanting the tour blades etc.

However, I like to think I'm a fairly competent (if inconsistant) player and know what I want. I had my heart set on some TM TP's but it was pretty clear that even in a regular shaft I was not good enough to do them justice. Disappointing but I'm glad I walked away rather than convincing myself I could hit into them over time.

If you are in the market for new clubs demo days give you a great opportunity to hit loads of balls and try different specs and maybe even get an idea of your swing stats (clubhead speed, lauch angle, spin rate etc) but go there with an open mind. Don't get swept up in the sales hype and enjoy it.

I've normally been to days where a lot of the big boys are all there together or gone to events held over a short time period so I've tested all the gear at once. That way you get a pretty good idea what is out there, what suits you and what prices are available. If you do find something on the day there is normally an on the day discount but I've had problems with some places taking my clubs in P/X as well saying its the discounted rate only. Of course P/X may not be the best value for money so you can always buy with the on the day discount and flog the old set via e-bay etc.

I love demo days but then I'm a gear freak anyway
