Just curious. How many knew that prior to 2016, the handicap of cat 1 players was not adjusted after playing in a 9 hole comp, whatever their score?

I didn't - but we don't hold 9 hole comps at our club so it never came up.

Wonder with the current trend to 6 hole comps whether they will be qualifiers in future?

I sincerely hope not. Our Ladies predominantly play 9-hole qualifiers through choice but are forever complaining about the system of handicap adjustment for these competitions. Their argument goes like this:

Player A and Player B both score 20 points in the 9 holes and a "neutral"18 points are added to give a figure for any necessary handicap adjustments. Comments follow. such as "Player A has had it after 9 holes and would never score 18 points on the back 9" or "I play better on the back 9, so would score more than 18 if I carry on playing this well".

I get tired of trying to explain that the system is based on what is scored on the front 9 and the "neutral"18 points is a bit of a red herring.

If handicaps were adjusted on 6 holes, imagine the arguments if 24 "neutral" points were added for handicap assessment.

We run 9 hole competitions, but up to this year they were run for those ladies who would not manage the 18 hole comp, as we only have one cat 1 player and she would never play in a 9 hole, the point has never come up. We will be running 9 holers for those who work and don't have time for 18. We will also be running extra day comps if there is a need.

And in answer to the OP, no I didn't know that.

A ‘neutral’ 18 points for the nine holes not played is added to the nine-hole Stableford score to determine whether players have played within, or better than, their Buffer Zones.

For handicap purposes, when a player fails to return a score within their Buffer Zone the points accumulated over the nine holes played is doubled.

This provides a more realistic indication of ability for handicap review than the former practice of adding 18 points to the outside of Buffer Zone scores.

Pretty sure you can play our midweek qualifier as a 9 hole if you choose to (not that I've done it).

What's the reasoning behind not adjusting handicaps below 5 in these out of interest?

Not that I'm planning on playing any right enough (I like to "earn" my 0.1's over the full 18 ;) ) just curious.

Misread the original post as "after" rather than "prior to" 2016.......

What was the rationale pre 16?

I don't know. It didn't last long enough to find out.
However, I suspect it was changed because no cat 1 players were entering because if there was no potential handicap change it simply wasn't worth bothering.
We'll see if anything changes this tear.

I didn't even know you could get nine hole playing comps, never even seen one advertised up round my neck of the woods. Maybe because Iv not been looking for them though. Stupid anyway, golf is a game played over 18 holes

I'd never heard that, but then I am not aware of any 9 hole comps being played at our place
