Well here is where im confused....They say that the downswing should start at the same speed as the takeaway and backswing...Iv got a nice smooth backswing club is online and the like but then its like im in a rush to get back to the ball....Thats when everything goes Pete Tong.
^^^This post and your OP are like exactly what I went through with my swing... its uncanny, even down to the back problems!!
Anyway it took me ages to get to the stage where I wasnt swinging at the ball as hard as I could as I felt the same thing as you, that if I swung as hard as I could, then at least I know that Im not going to hit it way long!!
The thing is though you really do need to tone down your effort level and tempo to get more consistent with you accuracy AND distance control. People told me that for years before I actually listened. Glad I didnt listen though now looking back, as I believe thats the reason I can now hit it long... but I;m glad I finally did listen because now I finally have a repeatable golf swing.
With regards to you rushing the downswing, what I did was practice trying to feel like I make a distinct pause at the top of my backswing. Try to feel like you are pausing the club in the "slot" before then allowing yourself to just swing freely at the ball. You probably wont actually be pausing at the top at all, but the key is to feel like you are...
A drill my teacher gave me was the one where you pause at the top of the backswing, count to 3 and then swing down. Helps more with your sequencing but that will in turn help you not to rush the downswing. That drill is actually not very fun and was so frustrating at first as it is diffiult to hit the ball properly, but now I can actually hit the ball pretty much aswell as I can with a normal swing! Stick with it and it will help a lot.
