7717yd Golf Course

Not far from me, most of my mates played it, say its a nice course, i'll get there one day,( not off those tees though )!!

Its too long for anyone, but if you accept you are unlikely to have a good score it makes it a lot more enjoyable.

It's a very good course off the whites too

I accept that and as a once a year event I could play, accept I'll lose a good few balls and not get anywhere near handicap. As long as the company is good and ideally the weather too, it would be worth doing

but once a year, its good fun

Certainly worthwhile on the odd occasion.

We play from the Championship tees whenever conditions and participants are right - there's no restriction. I'd be happier playing off the back tees for all but the (220+) Par 3s, 4 of which are so much longer than off the normal Medal ones.

Played Walton Heath (either course) several times off the Purples - about 7300 - and it's perfectly acceptable, even with a 235 yd Par 3 to start the Old! A long walk back from some greens to the next tee (5, 8, 10 on Old; 12, 16 on New are nearly 100 yards back!) but still quite playable as the Par 3s aren't really massively long - at 215, 11 Old is the other long one.

The Grove has a several 'Back on Black' comps throughout the year! A low capper member at an old club always seemed to do well on those days.

Its the championship course isnt it? And is it true a certain Paul Barrington made the 700yd par 5 in 2? I like the players but just a little too far for me to join unfortunately but i understand theyve made a deal on the old portishead course and are planning on turning it into a 9 hole par 33 course and thats 2 minutes away

I played this event a couple of years ago. We were called off twice for lightning. The course was soaked with lots of casual water and a few plugged lies. No run whatsoever and a stiff breeze blowing all day. I needed a 5 on the 18th (a 475 yard par 4 into the wind) to break 100. I made a 4 and was well chuffed. I had never played the course before either so that didn't help. Will go back one day and give it another bash, hopefully when the fairways are running.

yeah it was the championship tees but pretty sure it wasn't at its full length when he knocked it on. Usually it's about 640 and rumour has it only 2ppl have reached on two, Paul Barrington and yours truly

there is something about the 9hole course on the players website.

I have played it , its long but you get some run in these dry conditions , Not a great course and clubhouse is lacking , not somewhere i like to be a member off , 724 yard par 5 , is that the downhill one , not sure which number it is , once a year is plenty enough

You'll struggle to find a better course in the area and the practice facilities are second to none. i have little to no interest in the quality of a clubhouse much rather money be spent on the course. In fact I'd happily have a shed for a clubhouse and great greens ;-)

Im not sure when you played it last but i thought the course and clubhouse were very good ?

640 in 2 shots is something i can only dream of unfortunately :D. Nice guy Paul, he lives opposite my in laws but has just put his back out at present so no shows at the mo for him.

Wouldn't you just play the course as a par 78 or something, just to keep you sane?

Any par 4 over 500 becomes par 5, 220+ par 3s become par 4s... that way the day becomes more 'doable'?

My best buddy is a member of The Players and he enjoys the 'monster' course - and I can see where holes are combined etc that the resulting hole is a real golf hole and not a cobbled-together mish-mash.

...and you'd get home in time to paint your nails and get the dinner on:rofl:

I think the SSS of the day effectively did make the course par that high to be honest. I accepted that the long par 4s were basically par 5s (the usually are when we play the course normally).

The par 3s are the hardest part purely due to the carry required.

The year I played, one of my playing partners knew that he was not going to make the carry as soon as he stood on the 10th tee. Another lake ball in circulation. :)
