So, I played in my clubs annual monster event on saturday, the course stretched to a grand total of 7717yards!

i was very tough, but great fun, very strange playing par 5s that are 724yds long, and 230yd par 3's (over water).

Anyone within a reasonable driving distance, should come and play in the future as visitors are allowed, its the closest you'll get to playing course as a long as the pro's play!

the winning gross was 80 from a +1 handicapper, i shot 81.

The winning nett was 76, i also had 76 but lost on countback!

very pleasing, but also gutting!

the SSS was 80 too!

The Players near Bath, it holds a Europro event each year and suprisingly, the course works at that length, there are proper tees on every hole etc etc. It certainly wasnt a 'joke' set up.

Seems a bit of a nonsense to me. Simply making a course long doesn't make it good! Intelligent hazard positioning is more the key to 'proper' course design than being lazy and just relying on length! Good to have it available though.

My favourite 'fun' course has 6 Par 3s (the 1st apparently being the toughest opening hole in Europe!) and 3 of them are 220-235 from the back tees. All but 1 has water in front, so plenty of challenge available! In the Jamega tournaments they play there, they don't use the back tees on a couple of holes - that 'dry' Par 3 being one - as it's deemed to makes the hole too difficult (OOB effectively 5 yards over the green in that case!).

724 yd Par 5 is ridiculous - bordering on stupid imo (at least at sea level and flat)!

This hole is actually 2 holes combined into one (it always used to be a long par 5 at about 600yds but was changed as it was too long for standard golf. i'd also like to add, it was also a fairly easy birdie ;) 3wood, 3wood, 5iron.

The course is not gimmicky at all, just very very tough. There are plenty of holes that are no different to a normal course but there are no par 3's at 160yds or par 4's at 370yd for example.

As i said, this is a once a year event, so call it gimmicky all you like, everyone takes it with a pinch of salt and enjoys themselves

Once a year sounds like a good fun day, If I had to do that week in week out I would be suicidal.

Didn't mean to have a go, I've played in several fun days where the course/format/rules are amended to add something different and they are a bit of a novelty and yes they were all good fun

Sounds a very interesting concept - would be certainly something to do once a year

you've nailed it, absolutely no interest in doing it every week. Its made even longer than the pros play as the ball flies so much further in the warm!

but once a year, its good fun

I play at kendleshire just down the road. I've heard about this before, Shame I missed out!

What do they call the event? Will have to make sure a few of us do it next year.
