No, not mine!
A mate of mine is to be 60yrs old soon and we want to treat him to a round of golf on a really nice course.
The problem is .................. which one?
Cost is not an issue but I don't want to feel ripped off, Wentworth for instance.
Ideally within about 60 or 70 miles of Guildford, preferably not near London, and a really memorable course.
You know the sort .......... beautiful views, great beer and a good test of golf ........ but not silly.
I look forward to your recommendations with thanks and anticipation,

Slime.

Why not have a day at The Berkshire? Red in the morning followed by Blue in the afternoon? £160 for both courses during the week.

I was ok until you got the - " not silly" - bit

My other half has got me a round at Gleneagles with one of the pro's for my 60th

The Berkshire is a good shout, Walton Heath would be but could be considerably more, as would Sunningdale, but I'll suggest an alternative; the 2010 at Celtic Manor. Mileage might be a bit higher than suggested, but it wasn't that long a journey from Worcester Park, motorway to the front door. They call it the Ryder Cup experience, and they do make it a bit more than a round. You get a locker in the changing room for the day (I had MA Jiminez's one, sadly he'd cleared out the Rioja & cigars :(), taken to the range and chipping area 30 minutes before tee off to warm up, 18 holes and a commemorative bag tag with your name, date & tee off time engraved on it when you come off. Memorable for different reasons to Walton Heath or The Berkshire, but depending on what your friend likes could be good. Might even get a deal on an overnighter with 2 rounds for the same price as the others I mentioned, depending on the time of year.

Played the Red yesterday. Superb course, and I think I like it more than St Georges Hill. May have to play them both a few more times to make my mind up.

Courses such as West Hill do good rates playing after 3.00 in the summer, £50 from memory. Depending on budget I would rather play a top course on this basis rather than spend the same money playing earlier on an inferior course.

Hankley Common and Bearwood Lakes worth considering as well.
