5 Ball

When I read it, I noted that the OP saw the fifth player join them at the 10th so the group was in sight, but the 2 ball didn't actually have to wait until the 16th. This implies that the group ahead was no slower than the 2 ball behind for at least 5 holes on the back 9

That's how I read it as well but it is not clear what happened on the front 9. Were they held up by the 4 ball or just happened to be behind them? Either way, if they didn't catch the 5 ball until the 16th it must have been a pretty slow 2 ball. This time of year though it is easy to lose balls to hold up any group and the 2 ball probably weren't rushing as they were aware of what was in front. However, I wouldn't be looking to be let through with only 3 holes to play if the 5 ball were getting on with it.

I know if that happened at my club they would have been warned by the 'old fogey committee. I think it is wrong to play in a five ball. It slows play down for other groups, and surely for the five ball itself it can't be enjoyable because it would take roughly 20 mins per hole! They should have let you through in the first place, but it is inexcusable to not let you through when the 5th player joined.

Not fussed as long as I'm let through.... unless there's a club rule in place that bans 5-balls, if so string them up by their own game golf anti-loss device!

Free the Goswick 8...

Lol. That brings back memories. I was there. I may have been one of them. Can't recall. Long story, last hole, play through and all that. Let's not go there. :-)

A 5 ball isn't really the done thing, is it?

I was playing on my lonesome at a local council course last year and caught up with a 6 ball...with 5 bags. I'm pretty sure a closer inspection would have revealed an airgun in one of them. Prison tats and footy shirts were the order of play in this particular group. Very "de rigueur".

Needless to say I didn't make a fuss about playing through even though the hole ahead was perfectly clear.. but happily they only played one more hole before disappearing off the course.

You'll give people a bad impression of me - there are only 2 tees held together with stout cord (not string) and they're both pink castles. I've ordered a new waistband towel for Gainsborough.

We played a 5 ball at the Woodhall Spa forum meet a few years back. The one played in monsoon conditions. We started as a 4 ball, but for some reason Justone's three partners deserted him, and we took pity on him.
