currently got my handicap down to 16. trouble is i'm still making lots of putts. last 5 games 41,41,38,40,39. i use a scotty with the skinny stock grip

i used my friends two thumb grip today and it made a noticeable difference. i was thinking that it might be like the ''new driver syndrome''. i've had putting lessons and the pro said he cant see any major faults

has anyone else had experiances with changing the grip on their putter. good or bad

I don't want to be rude but 40putts a round isn't a grip issue IMHO. However, putting is about confidence and if changing gives you confidence it can't be a bad thing

Are you sure you're holding it the right way up?
(Joking)
Sounds like you just need to spend more time practicing your putting (if your Pro says there are no major faults)

Don't put a two thumb grip on your Scotty. I tried a fat Winn grip on my Newport 2 and it destroyed all feel. The grip weighs a lot and to keep the feel you need a heavy mallet head......like an Odessey 2ball or one of those big Ping branding irons.

What's the issue with putting? Leaving long ones short/over hit? Missing lots of six footers? Which side of the hole do you tend to miss on?

Are you counting ONLY putts from on the green, or all shots with your putter.

If it includes shots from just off the green with your putter then although it's still not great, it isn't disastrous either.

I used a Butch Harmon drill to get my distance sorted - 1 tee a placed a yard before the flag, and 1 tee a yard after the flag. If you putt within this - your pretty much guaranteed a 2 putt per hole - worked for me

Only problem I have is geting the bloody thing off the tee :-0 with the driver - usually costs me 6 penalty shots per round

In order to get some sound advice from some of the more experienced people on here you need to give more information on where and how you are missing.
How many three putts?
Are you missing short, long, right, left?

A total number of putts doesnt tell the whole story

Just because your pro said there isnt anything wrong with your putting, doesnt meant thats true neither

Thinking of having a putting lesson!

Nah, dont bother. Your pro might just lie to you and tell you there's nothing wrong with your stroke.
You've probably got perfect technique, you can probably see the line perfectly and I'll bet your aim, grip and posture are spot on.
I reckon it's your putter that's at fault. After all, what good is a Ping Anser to you and what do Ping know about making putters anyway.

Get a new putter, that will cure all your problems.

I 3 putt quit regularly unfortunately, but often for different reasons, normally its not judging the distance and often the break (I cant read a green to save my life), but often I get the distance right and then miss from less than 2 feet. its very frustating.

Your greens can play a big part too. (I eat a lot of brocolli and find this helps)

At my club the greens have some pretty severe slopes and when they're running fast it is extremely hard to come off without at least one three putt, in fact even when they're running at average speeds it's a big ask.

The best putting tip I ever got was from one of the experts in GM. He claimed that tension in the forearms was the killer and he recommended a very light hold on the grip to cure this. This tip improved my putting considerably and I still do it now, so much so that I don't feel I'm holding the putter at all until I take it back, at which time the grip tightens-up naturally.

Bob/Loiuse

Yeah I too miss a lot from under 3 foot (I feel huge pressure/tension from putts your 'expected' to hole) but tend to putt quite well from distance and get close to pin ( when not expected to hole it ),and I no I regularly putt better than some of my playing partners...........so no the problem lies/elsewhere within......I wont be getting rid of my Ping Scotsdale Anser putter I love it thank you very much.

Yes Crow totally agree about the greens as at my course have several greens with severe slopes especially 2 of the par 3's where at times you are happy to 3 putt especially ball above the pin

I would have had similar putting stats to yourself around 6 months ago but my average for my last 5 rounds is 34. It's probably closer to 32 though because as someone above said I was counting putts from off the green. I reduced my averages by picking a precise spot just in front of my ball on my line and then lining up to this spot. I've taken all swing arc thoughts out of my head and I just concentrate on my spot. I am also now not fixated on standing perfectly square.

Dave stocktons book unconscious putting was a revelation for me (I'm like a rep for this book now I should be on commission). May not work for you but it has for me.

Jack Nicklaus once said that he never has a putt longer than 3 feet, simply because he picks a spot 3 feet along his line and plays for it. Good tip.
