Amongst my many adventures in a howling gale whilst acquiring 22 points (yes 18 holes) in a round of our winter league, was calling a 2 shot penalty on myself.
I attempted to punch a low three quarter7 iron straight into the gale on our short par 8th but only managed to find the bunker on the left of the green, pin high so not too bad. The exit from the bunker was a little thin and ended 5 yds off the green past the pin, but only with 5yds to play with on the return.
A sand wedge was my club of choice with putting/straight wrist action to avoid mucky stuff before I got to the green and stop quickly. Unfortunately as I came through I caught the ground slightly behind the ball but the ball managed to muster enough pace to wander on to the green , more like a 9 iron runner and went in, 3!? :D
No, 5 was my report to my playing partners, after their congratulations on a great chip. I had actually hit the ball twice on the way through this inept chip.
Would Brian Davis have called this on himself with the knowledge that there were no cameras watching my every movement around the local municipal golf course? ;)

Ive had a 7 today on a par 3,there are no excuses to be told, only the laughter from my playing partners made me well
aware I had not done well,I told myself it was just a game,
even in the bar ,afterwards , when I had to pay the man,
I had to admit..I was terrible.cu

Why the two shot penalty? If you hit the ball more than once whilst playing a stroke (double hit) you only add a 1 stroke penalty. (It does not matter how many times you hit the ball, you only add a 1 stroke penalty).

to be fair I would have settled for a 6,no arguments, but
with the light fading one of the guys said that grounded my
wedge in the bunker, that hole is the undoing of me

That's right so he's now DQ'd for calling an incorrect penalty on himself and recording the wrong score :)

didn't know that.... are you saying that if you are unfortunate enough to 'triple hit' a shot somehow it's only a 1 shot penalty?

I did think a double hit was 2 but won't argue the odds, I got the impression my 22 points wasn't in contention anyway
Not many good scores today as we felt like we were playing a links on the scottish coast rather than the usually benign Midlands with the hoolly that was blowing :D

Rule 14.4 Strking the ball more than once.

On the R&A website a question is asked:

Q. While chipping from off the green, a player strikes the ball once and then strikes it a second time on the follow through. What is the ruling?
A. The player has made a stroke and must add one penalty stroke to his score. The answer is the same regardless of how many times the player struck the ball (Rule 14.4)

Just got to this one myself Russ, I'll know next time. Which I hope there isn't ;)
Because bummer was they didn't say thanks for being honest.

whateverway you look at it,it was bad,I must admit it got me
down a bit,but..I PARRED the next so at least I moved on,I
am not a rules person, and never will be,but all in all I did
play well,I play golf for fun,win or lose,it just spoilt it.. I only hope it never happens again

At least you got to play. I've been laid up all day. I've done the old double hit before including one in a bunker and the second hit hoiked it over my shoulder and lost in a water hazard.
Your right homer, just glad to be out playing after all the bad weather, saw your post on out of bounds, get well soon, will you be on the course tomorrow? ;)

I hope no-one laughed :D
