A competition is described as "3 clubs and a putter".
One player has in his bag, a driver, a 4 hybrid, a 7 iron and a 9 iron. He states that he will be using his hybrid as his "putter".
The Rules of Golf state that a putter is a club with a loft not exceeding 10 degrees designed primarily for use on the putting green.
The "3 clubs and a putter" competition is a "fun" competition to encourage players to carry their clubs for course protection (from trolleys) and speed of play.
Should the player :
a) be allowed to play without restriction
b) be allowed to play but with the proviso that the hybrid is only used on the putting green
c) not be allowed to play

If you're looking for opinions I'd say he/she doesn't play but ultimately the competition committee will decide (& will probably re-word it with more definition for next years comp) and as LT says its not really entering into the spirit of things to try and push boundaries in a fun comp

If it's called a "Three Clubs & Putter" comp then he has to have a putter. Seems obvious to me. What's the confusion? As said above, if it was simply a "Four Club" comp, then he'd be free to do what he's done there. But it's not.

The RoG may stipulate what the criteria for a putter is, but you can use any of your 14 Clubs to putt out with.
He’s not playing to the spirit of your comp and I’d go with C.

The general interpretation is that you are restricted to 3 clubs other than a putter (as defined).
I have no problem with anyone carrying less clubs or choosing to putt with something other than a putter.
The player is either sumarily DQ, or penalised under the rule restricting the number of clubs.

I'm sure someone could lend them a putter.

(But probably better if they were barred from ever playing at the club again for such a foolish oversight)

But you can use your putter anywhere on the course if you want to (been known to use it hit out from under ground hanging pine trees).

Not wanting to detract from the thread topic, but spirit of the game is important in these types of comp, they are intended to be a bit of fun. We have a Boxing Day comp every year, yellowsomes. Same as greensomes, both players drive, but the other pair choose the drive you play, should be choosing the worst of the two drives. A couple of years back, everyone is playing worst drives, except for the winning pair and their partner who openly admitted with big grins that they decided on the first tee not to both play worse ball because it wouldn't be so much fun for them. Infinitely not in the spirit of the game, and giving them a much better chance to win.

3 clubs & a putter, everyone knows that one club should be a putter, not another club to use instead of a putter. definitely not in the spirit of a fun game, so definitely C for me.
