Couple of threads going on just now about best or underrated courses but which '2nd' courses have you enjoyed at bigger name clubs? I've played a few really good ones whether 9 or 18 holes. A couple which come to mind are:

Burnham and Berrow......9 hole Channel course
Ferndown.....9 hole Presidents course.
St Georges Hill........ Green 9 (Red and Blue make the main 18)

Any others to throw into the mix?

Slightly off topic.
I found the Derby course at the Belfry to be more interesting and enjoyable than the '2nd' course. In all honesty i thought the PGA was a goat track, and very poorly maintained when you consider the cost of the green fee.

Not off topic at all Mungo, the Belfry is famous for the Brabazon, probably a lot of people don't even realise it has 3 courses.

When did you play the PGA? It's in great condition at the moment and the greens are looking great. It's certainly looked after more than the Derby anyway.

The Kintyre at Turnberry has got to be worth a mention cracking course, played it the day before playing The Ailsa and the it is a fantastic warm up for the main event!

Someone told me the greens are going to be in top condition very very soon and the course is looking good although the trees are still bare. You should love it though. Try and get on the PGA while you are there its a great course

I agree, the PGA is a decent course but I find the Derby more enjoyable.

The PGA has a stretch of holes in the middle that are very similar to my mind.
And when the rough is allowed to grow it becomes just too punishing if you're off line. The PGA is supposed to be based on a links layout but whereas links rough has a whispy element to it making it possible to find your ball and play a shot, the PGA is more meadow grass making it impossible to find your ball and very hard to do anything with it if by some miracle you do. (Okay, I need to learn to hit my ball straighter.)
