2nd class stamps - what's that all about?

Post Office only had 2nd class stamps - I said "It will get there won't it?" he said "Yep, but maybe not tomorrow"

So do they just kick 2nd class post around of the floor for a while? does it get there quicker if I put 2 stamps on? Is there some kind of guarantee that using a 1st class stamp will get my post there any quicker? Just trying to fathom why a 2nd class postage stamp still exists

What's the point of a 1st Class snail mail?! Snail mail really can be snail mail - and it normally gets there same time as 1st Class would.

Still seems expensive for a little piece of sticky paper - but pretty reasonable for what actually happens!

The only mail that is 'guaranteed' is the 1 you pay for to be 'guaranteed' and as such that takes precedent, then its 1st class and then 2nd class, so, a 1st or 2nd class letter could take many days dependent on how many more premium services which have been paid for are in the system at that time.

Had a friend who worked in the sorting room over for his present fund over xmas, he basically said the letters/parcels/etc get sorted into two piles 1st and 2nd and obviously they sorted the 1st class pile out first and any remaining time at the end of the day went to clearing the 2nd class pile on FIFO system, so at a quiet time a 2nd class letter could quite possibly be processed the same day as a 1st class letter.

First Class is picked and sorted first, and therefore depending on the volume they have to sort the letter is usually delivered in 1 - 3 days. 2nd class is picked and sorted after the 1st class, so depending on the volume may not be sorted until a day or 2 later and is therefore likely to be delivered between 3-5 days, but it can also be delivered within 1-3 depending on the total mail they are sorting. If you have no need to get a letter somewhere within 1-3 days, then just go for 2nd class. It is likely to get there within that time anyway, but it doesn't matter if it doesn't.
