2017 Old Course Ballot opens tomrrow

The 2017 Old Course Ballot opens tomorrow. Tried and failed to get anything out of this for the past 3 or 4 years....

Any tips ? Is it first come first served or a free draw of all the requests received during the period it is open?

Haven't played there in 1993! Probably due another go!

I got in first time of trying this year, entered as a single and was completely flexible for dates.

I am lucky as the Mrs' best friend lives in Edinburgh, so she thinks applying is a great idea.

If you queue as a single do you need to also play another course like you do if you go through the advanced booking??

No, They just take people in order, when the clubhouse opens at 6am. If there are any cancellations or spaces from the 2 day ballot they will give you a guaranteed tee time. Otherwise they will tell you of any incomplete 4 balls but there is no guarantee that these groups will allow someone to join them.

I visited in September last year, minus golf clubs, and it was quiet - the starter said if I'd had my clubs I could have played no problem....

Very true

My brother is at university there and so have visited St Andrews several times. If you go at the end of the high season which is near the end of October you can easily get to play on the Old course by going through the 2 day ballot providing you are a 1/2 ball.
