bobmac, but the swing is caused by the ball position, as the ball being too far forward causes open shoulders which lead to an out to in swing. If the clubface is square to that out to in swingpath, then the ball goes left, but more often it is square to the intended target line, hence open to the swing path.

If the ball moves back in the stance so that the swing path squares up, and the clubface remains square to that now square swing path, ball goes straight - result!

Ethan, I undertand exactly what you are saying, but you are assuming that as the ball moves forward in the stance, the shoulders open. That is not always the case. If the golfer has the ball forward in the stance and sits back on the shot and releases the clubhead through impact, where will the ball go?. Left.
The ball moves left to right because the clubface is open.(possibly a faulty grip.
The ball starts left because the swing path is out to in and above plane, leading to a steep angle of attack, (assuming the aim is straight)
If what you are saying is correct, why doesnt everyone who has the ball forward in his or her stance, slice?

If the ball moves back in the stance so that the swing path squares up, and the clubface remains square to that now square swing path, ball goes straight - result!

If only it were that simple
