2 Putting.....Acceptable or not???

I'm always hitting in the 100's so a 2 putt on every hole would be great for my game, and improve my score a lot I'd imagine.

I personally aim for a 2 putt on every hole, although on probably around half the holes it's normally a 3 putt.

I'd say it's acceptable if you're hitting lots of greens, but 36 putts AND not hitting many greens is wasting shots and the chipping needs to get better.

Practice 3-5' putts until your eyes bleed, then you can be more aggressive with the ones you think you ought to be making without worrying about leaving a 3' putt back.

Personally I'm trying to make anything inside 30' that isn't ridiculously fast or severely breaking, and would be disappointed if I wasn't making my fair share (2 or 3 /10) from 10-15'.

Just looking at my putts since jan, over 29 games I've played my putts average 1.72 per hole. 31.03 per round. Where does that putt me?

Dont worry too much the rest of my game is shocking :D

You can only embellish holes you complete on HDID, so there's a selection bias on the stats when it comes to Stableford comps.

Also - there's going to be a higher percentage of people bother to embellish their 93-25=68 on their medal round than their 119-18=101 - again, selection bias.

Edit: On the other side of the coin, cat one players will probably, as a group, gravitate towards tougher courses.

Beat me to it Neil, I should have added this to my post

each to his own, but I'd never go out with the attitude that I had to hole every putt of a certain distance. to my mind that way lies disaster.

it must depend on what you are faced with each time otherwise you miss a snakey, downhill putt on a fast green and think your world has come to an end.

putt to sink it each time but a two is not going to wreck a card.

There are a whole load of reasons outside of your control why a putt doesn't go in. All you can do is make sure you do everything in your power to make the putt but you can't force it in the hole.

2 putting from 10ft and out is acceptable. Obviously you'd hope to male a few of them but if you beat yourself up about missing them it'll just get in your head and you'll miss more and more.

I'm currently averaging 33.74 putts per round for 2011. Not brilliant but under par. I do a lot of work on 6 feet and in and really try to make these when they present themselves and try and be positive with the stroke as opposed to dying them in. I use one of those hole reducers on the 3-4 footers which is a frustrating exercise at the time but does make the hole look like the proverbial bucket when you take it away.

There are a lot of reasons why you don't make putts. I have to be honest and say pace is one. At Blackmoor, I was feeling as though I was lagging from 8 feet or more as anything too aggressive would leave you a 5 footer coming back. The quality of the greens to can mean you don't make your fair share. If they are bobbly you can put the best stroke in the world on any holeable putt but if it takes a leap into the air or gets knocked offline it'll never go in. As per the other putting thread though there is a lot to be said about getting a putting lesson. Get the basics of a good set up and stroke right and it makes everything else a lot easier

More important than putts per round is putts per green in regulation, and to a lesser extent putts/non gir.

Do your stats go that deep?

Two points. Firstly, putts per round is a meaningless statistic. A good player off low single figures will hit a lot of greens and therefore leave longer putts on average than a higher handicap player who misses most greens in regulation then chips on to leave a shorter first putt on average. Therefore a lower handicapper can actually look like a worse putter using this measure. Putts per GIR is the only measure that is meaningful for comparison purposes and that's why it's the most used stat on tour. I had 22 putts then other week but all that means is that I holed from off the green a couple of times and chipped really well. I only holed a couple from outside 6 feet on the green.

Secondly, it is a myth that even the best players hole a lot of 10 footers. On a good day a lot of the 10-15 footers will drop but on an average day most will miss no matter how good the greens are. The key is to never 3 putt from this distance and very rarely 3 putt from 25-35 feet. ANY 3 putt is a wasted shot.

Am I happy to 2 putt every green? Probably not. First that means I haven't holed any longish ones and that is one of the best feelings in golf, secondly it probably means I have chipped and scrambled badly, which never helps my score.

As for what I'm looking to hole, that depends on the putt. Anything under 15 feet I'd regard as makeable but I know I'll miss more than I hole. Looking at the PGA Tour stats for putts from 10-15 feet the leader is around 40%. Over 15 feet and if its straight uphill I'm going for it, if it's a snaky down hill left to righter then I'd be a bit more cautious.

Agree that from a pure putting perspective putts per GIR is the best measure but putts per round gives an indication of my all round short game.

Putts per GIR - 1.94
Putts per green missed - 1.61
Putts per hole - 1.73

Good, bad or indifferent...?

I'd say it was reasonable, but I guess it depends what/who you're comparing it to. School report might say "Could do better" :p

I've just looked at mine and this is an advert for putter fitting if ever I saw one

01/01/2011 - 09/06/2011 (20 rounds - home course)
Putts per GIR 1.94
Putts non GIR 1.68
Total 1.79

Since putter fitting
10/06/2011 - 06/07/2011 (6 rounds - home course)
Putts per GIR 1.69
Putts non GIR 1.53
Total 1.59

I know it's early days yet and I don't expect them to stay that good, but you never know! :)

1.76 per GIR.
