Good point well made I've only played two courses that have par 3s as openers and it didn't occur to me as I'm so used to our short par 4 as the opening hole.

Our place lulls you into a false sense of security. A 291 yard par four is followed by a 138 yard par 3. Then there's a monster 548, severely sloping and severle dog-leg par 5 with OOB all down the left and trees up the right. The amount of times I've started 4, 3, 8 is really depressing :angry: :fore:

i just want to get it away and in play tight OOB and trees right fairway bunkers and heather left so somewhere over 200 on grass and im happy at the minute.

Our 1st (off the whites) is a 329yd dogleg left par 4, there is OOB down the left and rough/trees to the right and a set of 2 x bunkers on the corner of the dogleg. As the crow flies it is about 270yds to the front and if there is a favourable wind the green is reachable from the tee, without a favourable wind it is a tricky tee shot as i've not reached the bunker before off the tee.

As our front 9 is where you need to score points as it is 100 times easier than the back 9, then it is a fanstastic risk & reward shot that so far, of the 6 or 7 times i've played it with a favourable wind i've gone for it. I've hit the green once and been short and wide a few times, and OOB once.

My mindset is generally "have it!!!!"

Our first is 320yds, filth on the left and OOB right. I aim at the right side and try to hit a wee draw back to the left side. If it goes straight or if I push it a bit, I'll be in the right hand rough at worst but that's not much of a penalty.

Distance isn't a worry, so my only thought is to swing smoothly. I've only ever missed the fairway when I've tried to kill it.

Probably a lesson in that somewhere.

Ours is about 350 Par 4. SI15. OOB right but too far away to worry about, and small trees in the semi rough both sides.

It's a fairly easy hole provided you don't get blocked out by trees in the semi rough and end up the right side so you don't have to come in over a bunker.

If it was in the middle of the round I'd be looking for birdie a lot of the time but as the first hole I'm very happy with a par. I hate taking 5 or more there.

We have a 525yd par 5, it's reachable in 2 but only if I pull a muscle!

I don't think about the score, just the drive.

I tipped up yesterday to play in a knockout match, 1st tee (white) had been pushed right up the back by the "stones"......bloody hell, greenkeeper must have got out of bed the wrong side. It's a tidy old knock off of there just to clear the heather, especially if you have the wind in your mooey.
Luckily it was slightly downwind and my well struck drive found the left hand side of the fairway. Was still a 5 iron in though. And I came up short.....

On my home course im just thinking hit it smoother not harder.
Its a pretty straight forward par 4.

Ours is a par 3 over a valley, I hit the greem maybe one inb three times so happy with a 4, delighted with a par. not had a birdie yet.

Couple of the courses I play have 'gentle' Par 5s to start with so little real danger (except headwind on 1). Another has an evil Par 3 - 140-ish, 19yd deep green, water on 3 sides!, so simply thinking 'stay dry'.

Ours is a dogleg right par4. Youv'e got a water hazard to carry at 210yrds with water at 230yrd to the left. No OOB but don't push/slice right or your into deep deep cabbage. Bunkers out at 260yrds or if your big enough fly them onto the 18th fairway for the best line. You can lay up short of the water hazard but you have to make sure its on the far left hand side of the fairway or your blocked out from the green.
I love our first. Get to use my favourite club straight off, straight down the middle and aim for the bunkers. Don't mind if I drive the bunkers either.

The first hole is a 420 yard par 4 stoke 7. For anyone who has played Bogside gorse, heather, and bunkers all over the place but not on the fairways so 1st objective is keep it down the middle. A 5 is not disaster as the 2nd is a short par 5.
