Typical played Sunday my first time with other members so they could sign my card to get a handicap. Hit a 60 on the front 9 and 109 total. Shocking my worst ever round very embarrassing. Went last night and hit a 44 on the front 9!!! Now why couldnt I have done that on Sunday!

Scorecard syndrome matts , like big comp syndrome , play well the 2 comps before then on the day ,, aaaaagh ..

welcome to the wonderful world of golf as shell would say

I have just gone through the same thing Matt, played the course 2 weeks ago went round in 91, since then I have done 4 handicap cards of 113, 112, 111, 111.

Read somewhere a while back that one of the quickest ways to improve your scores is to not count them as you're going around. For better players I think they like to know where they're at, which is fair enough, but I think in the higher bracket (where I place myself) its best you just write the score down and forget about it, be it a birdie or a triple bogey there's absolutely nothing you can do about it afterwards, so just play the next hole. When I started I had a serious problem breaking 100 and then 90 because I'd know coming down the last few holes how many I could afford to drop and inevitably dropped them and more. Its an artificial barrier, one we place on ourselves cos its a round number. Broke 80 a couple of times last year without knowing it til I totted up off the 18th and it felt just as sweet as if I knew it coming down the last! (which would have resulted in a 7 for 81 no doubt!). When you're in a comp or putting in a h/c card you're more conscious of your score than a social knock about, can't remember who said it (tour pro) but he said if you make a birdie put it in your back pocket, he was referring to not trying all out to make another on the next hole, but I think it would serve us well to do the same with every score, just back pocket, its done, move on.

I preach like a Cat 1, while my putting is just cat.

;)

Count to 5s. You know that if you do 5 on every hole you will have played to 90, so just keep a mental tally in your head about how you are to 5s. It's also nice to announce that you are only 5 over at the end.

I've played every day this week....

Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday - broke 80 each time, played pretty nicely, best was 74 worst 78

Thursday, Friday - lost it totally 86 and 85. Admittedly when any hope of a decent score had gone I did start trying some shots I'd never have gone for in a medal.

Best score for the front nine this week was two over par 37. Today I took 48 and was only semi-joking when I said I might not break 100; something clicked, not sure what, and came back in 37.

Strange game.
