Playing with Imurg at Aylesbury Park yesterday, we noticed that all the standard green posts that denote the 150 yard mark had been taken down and replaced with a single yellow disc in the middle of the fairway.which you have to be within 5 yards to see it.

Now that I have a Skycaddie it is not a problem, BUT for most guys, it is useful to have this visual aid.

What about the guy who is in the rough to the side, or 20 or 30 yards back from it. No way can the marker be seen.

Totally and utterly pointless in my mind

Dear Grumpy Fragger,

I get lots of letters from people in your position, so rest assured, you are not alone.

Indeed, these disks are a pain in the backside for all of us, they look great at first (although less visible from the vegetable garden) then within two-three years are hardly visible at all. We have them at 100 yards, and unless you are standing on one or have a friendly partner standing on one, you are truly up the creek without a rowing implement.

Thank you for writing in, a problem aired is a problem shared. A problem shared is a problem halved.

Agony uncle Dave.

I don't know.....

You gain an advantage by using a DMD then moan when everyone else is at a disadvantage because they've lost the 150's.

This is good news for you Frag me ole mucker!! Embrace it.
Now you'll know its 165 yards and CVG will have to guess!

Our course has got yellow 150 yard discs but have a collapsable pyramid centre which makes them visible from pretty much anywhere. the red 100's are a pain though.

I wish my life was so uncomplicated that all I had to worry about was how visable the yellow disc was!

You think that's bad.
Play Princes on the Kent coast.
On one hole the yellow marker will be 150, red 100 and blue 50 then on the next the red will be 150, yellow 100 and blue 50 and so on.
It's the only course I've ever played where a SkyCaddie was an absolute must.
Talk about bloody confusing.... :D :D :D

I think its called introducing a standard!

There are that many people with GPS and laser range finders that it'll soon become a worry of the past!

In my experience I played a course where the stakes were lifted up and replaced at distances that weren't 150yrds by school kids. They opted for plates so that the distance to the middle of the green is always consistent x

Also you want to worry that it really is 150 yards, you may be surprised to find if you measure with a GPS the measurements can be a little out.

Probably makes it more confusing that you are in the 99% that think they are 150/100/50 when they are in fact random distances that correlate to the Strokesaver.....

I think its a short sited pilicy by whoever decided to get rid if the marker poles but does make a DMD a necessity. I think my course suffers from a common problem where players take the markers out to play a shot and then either put them in the wrong spot or worse than that, forget to put them in altogether. Someone playing behind comes along and usually just puts it in where they find it which isn't always the right place. Cue a sudden 5-10 yard deviance.

I like courses that have a consistant yardage system on the fairway especially if they are well maintained (and not like Princes which as Smiffy said is a reat head scrambler). If you are on the short grass regularly, then these fairway markers can be a great help. For me chopping out the rough they are more for decoration

Our marker poles kept being moved by dog walkers having a laugh (I hate dog walkers on the golf course, sod off and walk somewhere else that isn't private property you ignorant illiterate xxxx).

Now we have discs.

I have a sky caddie.

My last course had poles white/yellow/red at 200/150/100, it worked well when they were not moved and when the hole was straight. When a 100yd marker was on the other side of a dogleg you could never tell where the measurement was from. My new club has green discs in the middle of the fairway with the yardages marked on them, so much better. You may have to look a bit harder but at least you can be sure of the yardages. I have just heard my old club have moved to this system using coloured discs.

I have just bought a Skycaddie so I hopefully won't have these problems to often.

Not many people can hit the ball within 10 yards (+/- 5 yards) regularly for any club. Therefore the 150 yard markers are only there for guidance. If the green is 20 yards from front to back and you aim for the middle the chances that you will be on the green which is good enough for most players.

The thing that I found annoying is that some courses put the markers to the front of the green whereas others the distance is to the middle of the green. Then again in Europe we are faced with distances in metres.

Some standardisation would certainly help.

This, I think, is one of the issues with the green poles at APGC. They were only on one side of the fairway so if you're in the rough on the opposite side they're about as useful as a chocolate teapot!
