Here is one for you,
I had my swing speed measures years ago long before I gave the game up and was a little more supple (around 1996/97) my driver speed was around 105mph +-2/3mph for average.
A year or so ago I had a go with an indoor launch machine and a swing stick, you know the one, the tube with a little ball that you swing and the ball indicates speed by markers up the stick, anyway, ended up with similar results.
Together with iron speeds means I have never needed to change from a reasonably stiff shaft up nor down the scale. Strangely I feel that I am swinging easier at the ball these days for a little more consistency.
My question, has anyone on here ever been measured for one shaft flex then a few years later gained a little speed (or lost a little) and found they needed different clubs/shafts altogether?
I have only ever played with rifle 6.0s and S300 shafts on my irons, am I right to assume that I am not far off the correct setting. I am not good enough, nor do I get the time to practice enough for a proper CF (as I have mentioned before) but getting it basically right matters to me.

I was fitted about 18 months ago.

Since then I've removed a lot of body movement from my swing and feel like I swing easier.

I went on a LM a couple of days ago with a 6 iron and my swing speed was only 1-2mph down on what it was with all the movement and trying to hit the ball.

Will be interesting to see the results with a driver when I eventually get to try the 910.

Sneaky little edit there while I was typing ;)

The general impression I get from about it on here, is that you can't match shaft flex directly to swing speed without taking into account your tempo and transition from backswing to downswing.

A player with a fast tempo or aggressive transition will flex the same shaft more than someone with a nice smooth tempo and little pause at the top, even though they have the same club speed at impact.

Yea there is a lot to be said about an efficient swing, getting everything moving at the right time without overdoing it. Look at Steve Strickers swing, it only looks like a half swing at normal pace and yet he is sneaky long.

I have a similar driver speed to you (107 I think it was), and 6 iron at around 90mph and have PX6.0's, which I now think are a tad too stiff for me.

One mans poison and all that though. :)

Hi,
Was measured about 5 years ago was 115-119 with the driver and 98-100 with the 6 iron have had a fair few lesson since and i thought i was swinging easier but end of last year driver was 114-118 and 6 iron was 96-99, i put the loss of swing speed down to getting old but since getting the lessons my distances have gone up must be catching it sweeter.

Mine has increased from mid to late 80s about 4 years ago to low to mid 90s at then end of last year. I was expecting that though as my pro told me I needed to speed it up a bit.

My irons are the stock steel shafts that came with my S59s in what Ping call regular. My Woods were regular flex graphite Ping shafts and I was pretty accurate.

Speeding my swing up lead to me being pretty wayward with the driver. I felt as though to keep it in play I had to hold back a bit which was pretty difficult. I know have fujikura motore stiff shafts in my driver and 3W and find I don't have to hold back to keep it in play.

Sneaky long? I think he also sneaked that news past the PGA Tour stats where he was 134th in driving distance last year.

The guy has wound it in and uses a 3/4 swing with virtually no wrist action. He used to be a lot longer, same as Davis Love III, him and Tiger were quite similar but he couldnt keep it straight enough so wound his in too. He still hits has 3 wood an average 255 yards.... To me thats pretty damn good.
11% of his drives last year were over 320 yards, the guy obviously cant hit a ball. His stats from the weeks show he hit a few 350 yarders, again not bad for mid table hacker with a 3/4 swing.

I have not a clue what mine is and ive always played regular. When i had a lesson recently with a pro that has never seen my swing before thought that was right and did not suggest changing.I also play fake irons bought off ebay and he said they seem fine as well.So sticking with what ive got for the time being.

When I had a Ping fitting some 10 years ago the 6 iron was measured at 84mph. About a year ago at my Mizzy fitting the 6 iron was measured at 84mph.
I got regular shafts in the Pings and stiff in the Mizzys. I reckon the tempo's changed but not much else.
I think my driver speed is around 100 and I've always used firm or stiff shafts.

Had my driver fitting at Ping last year and it came out at 100mph and my smash factor was bang on 1.5

I use s300's in my irons and always have. Never had a problem with them as far as I can tell.

Its all about the smash factor 1.5 is excellent mine was just about 1.4 not bad but room for improvement.
