I don't really have a consitant one, so at the range last night I tried to come up with something that worked.

I know Homer has mentioned before that putting on his glove is his trigger to focus on the shot - but what do you do, if anything?

I am the same as Homer, My glove comes off after every shot and thats when i switch off from the game. Just as I'm getting to my ball the glove goes on and i get back in my thought mode.

I also end up with a very sweaty hand if i dont take my glove off between shots.

Pull a club, have a loose practice swing, walk behind the ball, pick something about 12" in front of it to align to, walk round, take my stance aligned with a line parallel to the ball and the spot I have chosen, and then pull the trigger.

Mine is very similar to Murphthemogs except I can't do the spot 12" in front thing, I have to line up with something in the distance.

Be positive and don't take all day about it.

I like Murph's idea, I think I was thinking too much about it last night, usually you pick club and swing.

short and sweet, but consistancy is the key I think.

Do you know why its important to have a good pre-shot routine? :D

I've always believed it's so that when the pressure is on, you can eliminate outside thoughts and concentrate solely on your golf and rely on something you know works. Having a familiar routine will allow you to relax whilst coming down the stretch leading in a competition.

Supposedly anyway!

Using anything other than my putter, I stand behind the ball, choose a spot where I want the ball to land, address the ball, say in my hand "nice & easy, good rhythm" to myself in my head and then fire away.

When putting, I attempt to read the green, put the ball down with the line I think I need, take a few steps back and check the line, adjust the ball if needed, pick up my marker, take 2 practice putts, address the ball, look down the line I want to take and then fire away.

My putting pre-shot routing i've pinched from Tiger....it tends to work quite well too :D

i always line the line up on my ball with my target when hitting off the tee or putting.

Always mark my ball on the green and take time aligning it with the line i want to putt on. then when it comes to standing up and taking the shot, i can concentrate on distance as to get the line all i need to do is get the putter face lined up with the line on the ball.
3 practice swings without break then move forward and play the ball.

On the tee or fairway - no matter how close to the hole - i always approach the ball from behind and get a target about 6ft in front of the ball and line up on that. One practice swing then hit.

Mine is pretty similar to the others, i take a couple of practice swings to loosen up then i stand behind the ball & point on the line i want with my club & line it up with something in the distance, i walk up to the ball & aim my club face where i've just been pointing, take my stance then one last look at where it SHOULD!! :D be going, take a deep breath & exhale then let rip. Works most of the time for me. :D

Similar to Keefg--i dont take practise swings.

Stand behind the ball, pick a target line up with a target near the ball, move in and strike. Short and precise reduces the time to think negatively.

My problem is that I'm to quick. I see guys taking forever to hit a ball 100 yards. What is going on in their heads while standing so long over a shot? answers on a postcard pls!!!!! I should really slow down a bit but I find the more I think about it, it will go wrong. I always replace my glove while aproaching my ball, then I take a look to see what I have to do, select my wepon have a wiggle behind the ball then let rip. If it works good if it dosent ahwell there's another prov lost.

I have watched alot of guys playing this game and my god they do take their time. Talk about fidgety. Walking around putts like as if it's to win the Open, I really can't understand what is going on in their head's. The thing that really pi33es me off, is the guy who has 5 - 6 swings then hits it about 70 yrds, then stands for another while for more bloody swings, You've hit it, now go find the ball and lets all get in before dark.
Theres alot to be said about grip it and rip it.

One yard rule. Get to my ball, assess my options (wind distance etc) and make my club selelction. Glove goes on - game time. One practice swing by my bag. I have an imaginary line a yard from the ball and once I step over that line I'm committed to the shot. Address the ball, one look at the target and swing. Watch the ball land, step back over the line and glove comes off and stop thinking about what I did wrong, where its gone etc until we get to it. Clean the club and off to find it.

Sounds convoluted written down but I'm doing this as playing partners are getting ready to play their shots so I'm normally ready to step over the line and commit hen my turn comes.

Choose my weapon, stand a couple of yards behind my ball and pick a target in the distance. Have a couple of loose swings while looking at my target. Address the ball, swing thought is...long and slow...then shank it into the scrub, works everytime. :D :D

Well, made a real concious effort with the pre-shot routine yesterday and after 6 holes was +7 which as a 28(plus) handicap golfer I was delighted with.

Driver was hitting fairways, approach shot were on or near green and no more than 2 putts per green.

Then... we caught up three juniors, two of which were playing a decent pace, the third looked like he had never been on a course before. He never hit a shot more than 10 yards, three times he picked his bag up the wrong way and emptied the clubs on the fairway and at one point spend 90 seconds putting on his jacket!

It took an hour to play three holes, behind us a two ball and two three balls quickly caught up.

The two ball were members playing in the mid-week medal so we let them through, the kids quickly disappeared.

Anyway, after that I never got back into the swing of things and the round went to pot.

I am pretty sure now the mental side of the game is what is causing my high scores. That is the next think to work on!

I guy that I used to regularly play with had a pre shot routine which took about 30 secs a time. A bit slow but not unduly so until you multiply it by his 90 shots a round. 45 minutes for pre shot routines. Over the years this gradually lengthened by another 15 to 20 secs. Another half hour

So if you take a 4 ball, each taking 30 secs to (maybe) put on a glove, assess the shot, take practice swings, lining up, pulling the trigger or whatever, and each averaging say 90 shots, that makes 3 HOURS of pre shot routines

And some mad person thought that the cause of slow play was electric trolleys ;) ;)

My routine goes asses lie, choose club, address the ball, move back and pick a line. 1 practice swing then bang shot played.

I normally have an idea of what club i'd be taking before i get to the ball (distance wise) and then only do i change club lie depending.

At the momment its working ok thou my alignment at times is out, but i'm working on it.
