Your 'Go to' club

I dont have a go-to club.

It is a defeatist thing to do.

I am mentally strong enough to hit a couple of awful shots, put them behind me and hit the next with confidence.

Not necessarily Jon, sometimes you are faced with a shot which has a low percentage of making it over trees or you can elect to play low or round the obstacle, a lower trajectory bending shot can sometimes be safer than the a low cut grassy lie when trying to get loft on it.

Correct me if wrong but surely that is course management rather than "I cant hit my woods for toffee so I will hit my 4I, my go-to club off the tee's"

Course management and confidence go hand in hand, if you dont think that 6 iron is going to come out crisp, there is nothing wrong with hitting the 8i and laying up short, the 6i could get you into deeper trouble if you turn it over. Course management requires a slightly more realistic view where confidence says "I can do this" on each shot, sometimes confdence takes a knock so you need to balance what is best from the two.

Another situation, stood on a short par 4 with a sharp dogleg right, 5 wood to the corner is the shot, say you cant see the shot because of a tendency to hook that club, pulling out the driver and going for the corner or hitting a 4 iron to the fat of the fairway both make as much sense as each other if confidence is flowing for either shot over the 5w. Its not always about wimping out, sometimes the longer shot pays off too.

Not got a "go to" as I believe I'm capable of hitting every club in the bag. Soem days I prove myself right and others I'm down in the deep stuff looking for the stupid thing.

Dont have a "go to" club as such.
However enjoy hitting the 3 iron on long par 4's and on par 5's as i can hitting it low into the wind.

I disagree with it being defeatist, too.

The idea of the game is to get round the damn course in as few shots as possible. Now I'll play any shot going during a fun round.

But if I'm trying to score, then I'll play the course in as few shots as I can. That means keeping out of trouble. and sometimes it's easier to keep out of trouble by playing the easy shots.

I'll play my 5 wood rather than my 3 wood 90% of the time in this case.

That's not defeatist, that's playing to my strengths.

Certainly my hybrid is a club I reach for if I need a bit of confidence when another aspect of my game is going pear shaped. If the long irons are a bit off then I can hit a three quarter hybrid or use it to lay up short if my fairway woods are failing. Has even been used of the tee if the driver is being a bit wayward. I do not see it as being defeatest but sometimes the confidence can be a bit low and using a safe club for a couple of holes to get me back on track often helps.

At the moment my 3 wood played today withour a driver took 3 wood off the tee and shot an 82 which I was really happy about because I thought I would lack so much distance.

It used to be without fail my utility wood, but this recently has been going a tad pear shaped occasionaly, so it is now my 7 iron.

It doesnt matter how i'm hitting my irons, even if they're all totally screwed, i can always, and i mean ALWAYS nail my 7 iron and i have no idea why!

Not sure I currently have a go to club that I can totally rely upon, but My wedge play hasn't been too bad & my Pitching wedge has been behaving itself nicely & My 56 degree Vokey has come into its own this last week. Made a few nice chip'n'runs with my 9 iron too.

That said my driver has been behaving itself even in the wind its been straight, which is more than can have been said for my usualy good mid irons... very odd.

That said points scores have been good...

But which is my go to club... hmmm...! take your pick.
