Your best shot ever?

I made a pretty nice eagle at Murph's place the other week which was 3 perfect shots in a row.

Don't think I've ever managed 3 perfect shots in a row. Probably not even two, tbh.

When I was a teenager, the first time I played a major comp I managed to hit a 3I to within two feet on the par 5 5th, leaving my first ever tap in birdie ( I missed the putt )

In my 20s I played a truely serious strokeplay with a mate for money off scratch ( He was an ex single figures guy, I was an ex 17 handicapper ). Level going down the 15th. He was just off the back in two, I had hacked out of the rough to about 125yds for two. I played an 8I to within 3 inches for a par - he took 3 to get down. He couldn't shake it off and I beat him easily over the last few holes.

Don't remember any great shots in my time at Park Wood, where I played for a few years in my 30s - God I was dull in those days.

This year I've had several which will be stored for years, only time will tell which was the best :

My 5W from 190 yards on the 16th at Chartham Park during my first ever forum meet. Sunk the putt as well, which was nice. Shame about hitting my drive into the drink first, though.

A 6I over the top of the trees to a raised green at Smiffy's pad went down well, as well ( Possibly the 14th :D ). Followed by a 3 putt, iirc.

I managed a perfect draw with my 3W off the tee on the 14th at Copthorne as a one off. Slight dog leg with OOB down the left which knackers my natuaral slice. Even managed to outdrive James for the only time ever ( he took a six iron to make sure he didn't run out of fairway, but that's not the point  ). But I don't do draws, so to pull one off when I wanted to will definately linger in the memory. Oh, followed by a pushed shot to miss the green, of course.

And finally my drive on the 3rd at Eastbourne Downs during a quick skive 9 holer last week. I haven't hit a great drive all year. Not one. Having hit 3W off the first two tees, I tried a change of plan. Hitting into the sun, I didn't see it come down, but it felt good. Couldn't find it on the fairway, having spent a couple of minutes looking for it, I couldn't be bothered to look for longer, or go back to play another, so I marched down the fairway towards the next tee. And suddenly there it was - a good 30 yards further forward than where I was looking. I paced it out to be in the 270 - 280 yard bracket. Ok so it was a tad downhill, and the wind was definately behind, so it would probably have just about been a 240- 250 drive without the extra help. But I don't care. It was straight and long ( enough

The best shot I have ever hit came in a friendly game against my service manager Dave at Highwoods towards the end of last year. We had a match where the loser would pay for the Christmas dinner for the other department....
We got to the 8th all square, really good game. I hit a reasonable drive but pushed it slightly and ended up under some fir trees that run the length of the right hand side of the fairway. He was about 15 yards on from me sitting in the middle of the cut stuff. Our 8th hole is a reasonable length par 4, flat until you get about 80 yards short of the green where you have a stream and then it climbs steeply to an elevated two tier green.
I had to keep the ball really low to stay under the overhanging branches of the fir trees, so pulled out a four iron and took a couple of practice swings. I jokingly said to Dave something along the lines of "I saw Seve do this at Woburn one year" and took my swing. I swept it away as sweet as a nut, and the minute I hit it, I knew it was good. It flew forward staying under the branches, and then climbed slightly to hit the bank in front of the green. It bounced up in the air and came to rest no more than a foot from the hole.
He couldn't believe it, and to be honest.....nor could I! I could stand there all day trying to pull off that shot again and never do it. Not in a month of Sundays.
The look on his face was a picture, and although he managed to hit the green with his second and make regulation par I tapped my ball in for a very unlikely birdie. I then went and birdied the 9th (courtesy of a putt that must have been all of 30' in length) so got to the turn 2up.
He never recovered from it, and I ended up winning 3&2 I think...
But that has to go down as the best shot I have ever played, because the ball did exactly what I wanted it to do and had pictured in my mind before making the shot.

I have had a few since starting the game again, The first that springs to mind was at Bawburgh when I played on a green fee. There's a long straight par 3 around 200-210(cant remember the number) and it was playing into a strong wind slightly off the left, the fairways and greens were rock hard during the dry spell we had. I hit a 19degree rescue and drilled it low under the wind, altough a perfect strike that held straight it ran way through the green and behind some trees in thick rough. I had no route under the trees so I had to go over and I pulled off a great recovery shot, I took out the 60 degree wedge and sent it up almost vertically allowing the wind which was now from behind to guide it towards the green, it ended up within 3ft and I got the par.
The same day I birdied two other par 3's with long putts, one of which the hole is called putters delight (or something similar) and I was left with 40ft+ downhill with a massive break one way and then the other, sunk it.
At my new course I have birdied the 18th (par 5) 4 times in a row, usually it's a straight forward shot into the green but last week with the wind against my drive came up short and trees to the right blocked off my line of attack, I took out the trusty rescue and aimed well left and with a big fade found the middle of the green for an easy 2 putt birdie.
Thinking of all these shots makes me feel good, im almost forgetting about the 7 double bogeys last time out

It's hard to pick out individual shots as i believe i've hit quite a few over the 19 years i've been playing. I suppose both my hole-in-ones would have to be up there?

To be honest I've hit loads, but a bit like some others here its hard to pick the best.
Best under pressure was undoubtedly my opening drive at the Srixon/Cleveland Shootout at Bearwood Lakes with Editor Mike, David Howell and what seemed like a million spectators watching me (probably about 40 really). Added to that torment the knackered knee I'd suffered 3 days before and a heavy cold and raging toothache, to hit the fairway and have my drive chosen probably stands high in the list.

Par 5 uphill placed my drive perfectly on the fairway (that is an achievement on it's own) but I had to clear 2 ravines to the green or lay-up on the fairway between the ravines. I chose to attack with a 2 iron which cleared both ravines onto the green - two putted for birdie.

Hole #4 Las Ramblas in Spain if anyone knows the hole

Aged 15 I hold a 4 wood on a par 5. 230 yards - a beautiful strike that arrowed towards the pin. Pitched on the green, bounced twice then smacked the hole and flew in.

An albatross.

The funny aspect to this was that I was about to hit the shot a minute earlier but my grandpa asked me to stop as the greenkeeper was by the green. We waved him on and he cut a new hole, plugged the old one, stuck the flag in and waved a thank you.

He saw my ball go in and went potty! He waited for us by the green and when we got there was full of congratulations. He gave me the turf that he had cut out to make the new hole. I planted it in our garden at home that afternoon!

Happy memories.

I've been playing for over twenty years so I've hit some great shots over the years. One of the strangest however occured recently: 180 yards downhill to a very small green. Five iron in hand. At the point of impact I knew I'd got a good one away. I watched the ball fade slightly in the air (perhaps a five foot movement), pitch ten foot behind the pin and then spin back to within four foot. Pleased as punch I looked at my divot - it was pointing 45 degrees to the left of the hole!!! I have no idea why the ball didn't end up in the rubbish or slice outrageously but I'll take the end result every time!!!

16th at Leeds Golf Club, had around 60 yards to the pin, in the rough and behind a tree.

Lob wedge cleared the tree and dropped and stopped just over the pin. Superb. Did everything I aimed and planned to do - and as a 28 handicapper that doesn't happen often.

It was the first time I played the course, it was getting dark and unbeknown to me the 16th is a green shared with the first and I was a few foot from the 1st and about 75 foot from the 16th flag.

Still, my best shot as it did everything I planned, even if it was the wrong flag!!!

Dont know about best shot ever however these three stick in my mind.

1) Holing a 40 plus footer downhill across the slope on the last at St Andrews for a 3 in front of about 40 Japanese tourists who all applauded. That was magic! Think they thought I was Seve!

2) Driver off the deck on the 10th at Machrihanish to 3 feet for a nice wee eagle. It was a flushed strike into the wind.

3) Playing like a fud for 17 holes at West Kilbride in a "skins" game with 3 of my mates. I then proceeded to birdie the last and take £32 off each of them as there had been so many halved holes and holes halved with birdies.

What made it memorable was the fact that one of them spat the dummy big time!!!! A serious huff.

He gave me the turf that he had cut out to make the new hole. I planted it in our garden at home that afternoon!

Happy memories.

Our greenkeepers use this to plug the old hole......what do yours use?

A plastic plug with astroturf on it.

How much of your green is now covered in astro turf plugs?

I like reading about all these sensational shots. A pity I don't remember any good ones myself. I play my golf in stunning mediocrity. Tee, fairway (if required), green, putts (2). Nothing flash. No birdies, no eagles, hopefully no bogies. Pretty boring really.

Holed a solid 6 inch putt the other day. Hit through a slight left to right break. Does that count?

I hit a couple of crackers today, I only got 6 holes in before I got rained off but probably the best 6 holes i've ever played.
On the par 4 3rd (at Weston) I hit a poorly connected drive and left myself with 200 yards to the green, I hit a 5 iron to about 6ft, but it was such a great strike, I holed the putt for birdie.
On the 4th I absolutely creamed the drive 300+ Looking back at the card I cant work it out but I played a 7 iron into the green. The hole is 534 yards, The distance in my head when I pulled out the 7 was 170-180, so either the drive was 350+ or I hit the 7 iron 200 yards, either way it was pin high about 12 ft away, I 2 putted for birdie.
I dont think i've had 2 birdies in a row before.

Why the hell would your greenstaff need to use plastic plugs??

Are they just too lazy to cut new holes? Are their a number of these over the green and they just cycle them round??

I've seen them on council pitch & putts but never on a "half decent" track.

Our clubs foursomes matchplay comp' this year.
My partner had just knocked the drive into a pond, our opponants were middle of the fairway, 180yds from the green.

My partner told me that after taking a drop it was a case of "sh*t or bust". So I went for it with my rescue wood. The ball flew over the OOB & a line of bunkers, landed 5 ft short of the pin & ran 3 ft past.

He holded out & we won as they bogeyed.

It was my best as I nominated it to my partner, said where I wanted it to fly and land, everything. A great feeling.

A putt and a shot count for 1 stroke... how come I'm the only one to find a 40 ft "banana"putt my best shot ever. We see it when we practice...we don't spend time enough on the practice green.

Best regards from Belgium
