There are comments on this on an earlier thread re: headcovers, but it is poignant enough to a situation I have at the moment and I feel deserves its own thread

A week or so ago I noticed that the shafts on my 3 wood and hybrids had been rubbing on my bag, enough to cause worrying indentations. The protection at the top of the bag had completely worn away. Having only bought the bag last September I went back to the shop I bought it from, howver decided to hit a few balls at their range before discussing the bag situation. The timing was perfect, I hit a couple of balls with my 3 wood and the shaft completely snapped at the point of the wear !!! That fuelled me to immediatly have the discussion !!

I have to say they have been very good about it. They lent me another bag and have sent mine back to Callaway along with the broken 3-wood.

Lets see what happens.......but I'm expecting the minimum of a new bag and cover the cost of a replacement 3-wood.

Mine seems okay at the moment, but I know that when I clip on my heap bag-stand, there's a metal prong at the top that can easily scratch my drivers badly, so I try to wrap my towel round it. My driver's secondhand and already does have a big wear-mark on it.

My 3,5 & Hybrid have got marks and dents on the shafts, and the cloth around the holes on my bag has worn away where i put those clubs, i have painstakingly sown cloth around the holes so hopefully that will stop it. Also bought some long necked iron covers to stop them rattling around. I have a Callaway stand bag my Kids gave me on Fathers Day last year so it didnt last that long. ;0(

Colin, let me diagnose this and please be brutally honest with me.

Do you carry your clubs?

I am guessing the answer is YES.

When carrying them do you hold the base strap with your left hand and rest your right hand on top of the clubs to reduce bag chatter?

I am also guessing this is a YES and this is where the problem lies. The extra weight of your resting arm is causing your shafts to rub and wear. I have noticed this on my Ping G10 driver AND 3 wood and they have different shafts in them.

I have the same problem with my titleist 3 wood. I use head covers and carry but I dont rest my arms like Mad has pointed out.

I think when I slide the club in the sock bit of the head cover slides up on the side of the bag and then as the heads rock back and forth, it just wears the shaft away. My indent is quite deep but I have been assured it will be fine, we'll see.

madandra, i think its more to do with the Ping headcovers, i had the same with G5, shaft wear at the bottom of the headcover, i emailed ping about there poor design said they would look in to it. I now use a headcover with a longer cover down the shaft of G10, no more problems with wear on the shaft.
