I played with one of our young players last week who is off 0.6 currently, and I noticed a Tape Measure hanging from his bag.
"Whats that for ? " I asked.....

He grinned, and was a little reticent to tell.......

'Go on....I'm curious......" I prompted......

"Well, he explained, its a practice drill from the Yorkshire Coaching School,(or similar), where you have to hit a ball to 30yd marker, then to 50yd marker, then to 70yds, and then back to 50yd.
Do it 4 times, and then go and measure each from the marker, work out the average, note it down, and keep track of it."
"Do it regularly, and hopefully see the results come down."

So how many of us have the dedication required to get low like that ??

I assume he is measuring inches, not yards, and so a GPS is useless, unless yours is better than mine, and if so, can you lend it to the US military.

Sounds a bit pointless to me, no wonder he was reticent about explaining.

Homer - but you have to admire the dedication required to improve and get low, its a different game to the one most of us play.
The lad holds our Course record, 63 (CSS of 69)

Thats dedication for you,the lads obviously some player and puts in some practise. I have one to ,to measure my drives with my R9 to make sure they go past the ladies tee's. :D

I have to be honest and say I believe you can get low without the need to resorting to that level of obsession. It obviously works for him and fair play but I know many low figure (inlcuding England internationals and county captains) who would laugh at the idea.

I once played with a guy who produced a tape measure to determine who was to putt first even though it was obvious who was closer to the hole!

I believe that if something works, then it works. Every golfer is a different beast with their own methods and practices.

However, I don't go for that type of meticulousness. I'm a great fan of intuition and gut instinct. I don't tend to bother much with yardage. Instead I just look at the shot and go with the club that feels right. For me, there is a sense of purity this way, free from the burdon of numbers.

I'm not saying that that is the way for everyone, but it feels right for me.

OMG!! I think someone has abducted Homer and replaced him with a laidback and carefree golfer. Anyone got his mobile number that can ring to check he's OK? :D

I'm fine just being a realist. OK perhaps it has come as a shock to many and for those that have had to step away from the PC I'm sorry. I would rather be working on technique, short game finesse and my putting than worrying if my pro V spun 11 millimeters further than I wanted.

Homer: I was just advising the level of dedication that the low guys put in, and its no different to what you might do, its just that he has higher expectations and a desire to really improve.
He started the year on 2 HC, has been down to scratch, back up to 0.6 presently, and a target of +1 for end of season.

You just dont get down there without working bloody hard on your game, and then a bit more.
I think most of us merely 'play' at practising, without monitoring things perhaps.

I mean, I can play a bit off 10, but playing a Medal with him illustrated the gulf between us.

If I want to play anywhere near my handicap on a consistant basis I need to practice 3 times per week, play at least once and do at least a decent hour or two on putting drills.

If I want to play off +1 I'd have to think about doubling that... and hiring a new body :)

I'm not surprised that some keen players might get into this sort of thing. A tape measure seems overkill though; if you always come up short/long on a particular distance when pitching you'll know what to look out for on the course.
Imagine though, if you were good enough and practised hard enough to always get within a few foot, you'd make SO many par saves from 50/70 yards.

I'll dream on....

I have to admit that when I work on a similar drill, rather than use a tape measure, I just measure using the putter - those within a full putter length and those within the grip length :D :D

Tape measure, on a golf course, you're 'avin a larf :D
I use 'em all week for work. I wanna forget work, and play, well try :D

Golfmmad.

Regardless of the technigue used, to a degree. It does show the determination and dedication to detail that probably seperates 'them' from 'us'. It's the same in any endevour.

These are the guys that get laughed at by their mediocure friends. These are the guys that look a bit different down the practise ground or range. These are the guys that aren't down the pub on a Friday night. These are the guys that don't want to be 'normal'. They do something different, and get different results to the rest of us that don't want to look different.

Admitedly we all have a 'plateaux' of ability given time, money and natural ability or lack of (any of them). But to rise above the 'norm' something different has to be done.

Good on the lad. Regardless of what individual techniques he may be using. It's certainly working better than my 'programme'! :D
