You can now win an Olympic Gold Medal in......

Everyone gets a Golf Medal in case they feel "hated on!"

South African Minister of Sport just called asking for @Captainron 's contact details.... not sure if it is re National Service or wanting him in the Breakdancing Squad! :ROFLMAO:
“The important thing in life is not the triumph but the struggle, the essential thing is not to have conquered but to have fought well.”
Baron Pierre de Coubertin

Why do people always suggest “drop this and drop that” because it’s a sport where people are judged - for years there have been sports where people are judged to a specific criteria

The Olympics is superb in bringing these sports to the masses and highlighting that there are other sports out there beyond the main stream

I would prefer that they remove the likes of Golf from the Olympics and leave all sports where the pinnacle of that sport is winning an Olympic Gold medal

The best thing about the Olympics is the diversity and seeing all these new sports and helping them grow - you only have to look at what 2012 did for the likes of dressage and how it captured the nation

Maybe I’m not cynical enough or too much of a sport romantic - but the more of these random sports the better - every sport deserves to have a pinnacle and to be in the limelight even if just for a month
Why is a Golf Olympic Gold Medal not the pinnacle of the sport?

Gymnastics already has the floor routine, so there's precedent for judged dancing already being at the Olympics.

Anyway, aren't these additions usually just vanity projects to give the host nations an easy medal anyway? They soon get killed off. Climbing is at Tokyo next year and as much as I love climbing I don't think it classes as an Olympic sport even though it's intensely athletic.

See I think climbing is a good event. It is a race (or at least timed) has room for strategy over routes etc so I can see that as a good addition to the Olympics, sort of a vertical 100m.

I'm looking forward to seeing it but it's a mess. It's not organised in disciplines, they're doing it as a combined format of Speed, Lead and Boulder. Speed climbing is a small niche within climbing that most climbers don't like as it's much less technical. Lead and Boulder are technical but incompatible with Speed as they are not a race against the clock. The combined format is essentially shutting-out people competing within their preferred discipline so many of the best climbers aren't interested in turning up. The combining scoring system looks crazy, it's a bit like like putting a 100m sprinter in a marathon and asking them to the accept the average position of both races because they're both running and there's only one medal.

France is going to be slightly different, they're separating Speed from Lead and Boulder but it still won't attract many of the world's best climbers because the best technical climbers are not the best competitive climbers and vice versa. All in all it's another example of sports governing bodies going giddy by chasing Olympic funding and satisfying almost none of their members in the process.

Anyway, I've just remembered people dress up on horses and make them dance at the Olympics too. I'll take Break Dancing over that. :D

I heard that baking is being considered as the next 'sport' due to the popularity of Bake Off.

Because it isn’t - unless you see it now above the four majors ?
It's an accolade not rewarded by money but purely for the sporting achievement. Golf is not really different to so many other sports where an Olympic gold is something rather special, it's not about World records, it's not about winning the British or USA accolade, it's about winning an international championship that sees the winner as the Word champion for the next four years.

In my opinion it's a true pinnacle of a sporting career. Mo Farah probably treasures his Olympic medals above all the rest and I guess the same holds for Justin Rose.
