We'd like to take this opportunity to wish you a Happy Holidays and a very Merry Christmas from all at Golf Monthly. Thank you for sharing your 2025 with us!
I have a Taylormade Burner 2007 model which has a 1" longer than standard shaft. I am only 5"7 and the length of it was causing me some problems with strike and accuracy. I decided to take the drastic measures of removing the grip and sawing off just under 2 inches of the shaft and having a new grip fitted. The results??? If anybody says you will lose distance it's a load of rubbish. I'm sriking it right out the middle everytime as I'm more in control of it and more importantly more confident off the tee. If anything, I'm hitting it a little lower but I can categorically say I have not lost any distance. I have a SkyCaddie so I have measured my good ones. If anything, I'm slightly longer due to more consistent strikes out the middle.
Probbly irrelevant, but I've always thought that keeping the drive straight was more important than that final 10 yards of distance.
From choice that would always be a standard length club, but with 11 - 11.5 degree loft ( I forget exactly which ).
Then I used to have an old 9.5 degree club with a smaller head, and long shaft, purely for practice purposes.
So I'd get the longer club out on the range, and hate every failed effort I made with it. Then dropping back to my proper driver was like taking a 3 wood off the tee.
Pyscobabble rubbish I expect, but it worked for me ( How stupid do you have to be to be able to con yourself like that ? )
Hi Mansell,
i have a Callaway driver off the shelf. I am 5' 9" and although i cannot remember my wrist to floor measurement, i gathered by looking at a few different fitting charts on the web that i was actually an 'off the peg fit'. After a quick glance at some fitting charts on google images, your height of 5' 4"
would indicate that maybe a shortened shaft would be of benefit. Anything up to 2" shorter by the look of it. Lots of other golfers swear by custom fitting so perhaps a trip to the Pro shop could enlighten you more.
