yips?

can someone please tell me what the "yips" means?

'Yips' is a general term for a mental condition effecting golfers whereby the golfer is so keyed-up that he/she is physically incapable of controlling the normal motions necessary to execute a decent swing. The 'yips' come in various forms. Mostly they take the form of being unable to take the putter head away smoothly from the ball to start a stroke, resulting in a very bad jerky putt.

In extreme cases, golfers with the 'yips' are no longer able to play the game.

I believe it was the "yips" that put an early end to a certain P Aliss. Please correct me if i'm wrong.

Also most of the guys using the broom handle and belly putters have some form of this affliction

David Yip, that famous actor who used to play the Chinese Detective on BBC a few years ago used to play two or three times a week until his kids came along.

So the Yips certainly ended his golf

Its an affliction I wouldn't wish on anybody. My dad had dartitis as did his brother who was England B at the time and on the verge of breaking into the A team (Whitcombe, Lowe, Bristow et al). He could hit 180 one throw and then put 6 in the skirting board. He got over it but never played representative again although he is still knocking around Milton Keynes supre league.

Peter Allis has gone on record many times saying how the putting yips forced him to quit. I thought Jacklin didn't quite get that bad but was just hammered confidence wise on the greens and so stopped playing.

I sometimes wonder if I have dartitis or if its just the loss of feeling and body senses due to MS, but it drives me mad.One minute throwing like a pro the next I cant even get the dart to land on the board spike first.

I know Bernhard Langer had the yips for a while and nearly fell out of the game, I would love to know what got him back into his form, I know it wasnt simply putter change?

I think Langer went through it two or three times. I don't there is anyone else still playing at his level that has done this.

I go through it every now and then. It is quite weird. I feel calm, and have a few practice putts, all feels good, I stand over the ball, take the putter back, and then just at the point of impact, it is like an electric shock through my hands, the putter jerks like a fish, and the ball goes anywhere (and any distance). It is quite comical for the guys I play with, but more than a bit annoying for me, especially in medal. I find if I change my grip (by rotataing my right hand to be more on top), then it doesn't trigger the spasm, but this is really only a work round til it goes away.
