Played in a yellow ball comp last weekend in our captains choice. I had never heard of this format but really enjoyed it. I believe there are many variations of the game. We played team of 3 stableford with best 2 scores selected.

Each player had to play a yellow ball on six selected holes, your score with the yellow ball counted as double, but if you lost the yellow ball it was 10 points deducted. I know in some variations, if an individual looses the yellow ball he/she is out of the game. The captain thought this a little harsh and chose to use the 10 point deduction option. I can tell you the cheeks are twitching when you have the yellow ball at your feet

We lost one yellow ball in the water (not me thank goodness) and my team finished with 80 points, well below the 120 points winner. But I had a nice nearest the pin feather in my cap

I am a course marshall and I came to know of this yellow ball game. It was a society that was using this format and their rule was if the ball is lost then that was it. The amount of people that lost it on the 1st T was unbelievable lol. It seemd that the yellow ball bought added pressure.

Have played yellow ball a few times.great fun,, our format is to try a mix of low, mid and high handicap in each team..I was the high handicap...Our low handicapper managed to put the yellow ball in the water with his tee shot of the first..so 18 holes no yellow ball and still 85pts..What may have been ??????? Still good fun and a great day..

I played it once. I was the low h'capper and usually the best driver. Our format was if you lost the yellow ball, that was it. It was only 9 holes and I got nominated holes 2,5 and 8 on account of 2 being a long par 4 and the other two being reachable par 5s.

I promptly blobbed the 2nd, blocked my tee shot on 5 into the trees but got a lucky bounce out into the semi. Pulled out the 3W, hooked it into the trees on the other side of the fairway and lost the ball.

My playing partners were well impressed

I've played the yellow ball comp quite a few times, and it is a good laugh if you are going away somewhere with a large group of lads or planning a society day.
Whenever I've played it, you decide on the first tee who is going to play it on the first, second, third and fourth holes and you must stay in that strict order throughout the time you are still in posession of the ball.
It makes sense then to let the lower handicappers have it on the first and second as they will get to tee off with it 5 times each as opposed to the higher handicappers four times each. But then you look at the scorecard and see that the 4th, 7th, 11th and 15th holes are SI 2, 4, 1 & 3 and realise your worst golfers are going to have the honour on the four toughest holes on the course! A good game where strategy really comes into it. And once you've lost the ball you're out.
