Yardage gap, what to do?

2 days ago, I somehow managed to loose my sandwedge  I didn't realise until today though! I used it on the 13th and had no need for it for the rest of the round and so didn't realise :( I finally got the clubs out the car today for a clean and realised.. no sandwedge! Called the club and no-ones handed anything in I'm going to go and have a look later for myself though.

If I don't find it, then it forces me to sort out a problem with yardages. Basically my PW is 44 degress and my wedges 52 and 56, not well thought out I know :p Thats an 8 degree gap between pw and gw and then only a 4 up to my sw. I don't have space for or want 3 wedges so I'm trying to decide what to do. I found that before I often had the problem where my 52 was to little and 44 way to much and so had to do a half shot with my pw. I'm thinking of maybe swapping my 52 for a 50 and getting another 56, however I recently used a friends 58 and found it really handy in tight spots around my course (pot bunkers etc). I should mention that I'm quite handy with my 52 and I prefer using it for 50-70 aproaches to my sw for some reason. What would you suggest?

Thanks

Nick

Buy a new 56, the 58 isnt much more lofted and nothing a 56 cant do. I have a 58 but rarely use it as I am more confident with the 56. Im thinking of chopping the 56 for a 54 though which may force me into getting a little more intimate with the two.

A sand wedge is a personal thing. I carry a 52 and a 58.

I never ever hit a full wedge, gap or lob wedge as I feel as though I am not in control when I do this however thats just me.

Buy what you are comfortable with.

I'm not much of a fan of full swing wedges either, I'm not near enough any golf shops to just go and have a gander at some. I think I'll just have a try of other peoples wedges and see what fills the gaps the best. I really hope my old one turns up though, its the only club from my original starting set of clubs that is still in my bag so I've grown slightly fond of it :(

Thanks

I have two options. In the summer when the course is running I'll drop the 5 wood or hybrid and carry PW (46) 52, 56 and 60. However at the moment I am using both my 5 wood and hybrid on the par 5's, longer par 4's and of the tee on several par 3's and so I'm carrying PW, 52 and 58 to give an even spread.

To be fair I could do with just the 52 and 58 but I love the 60 out of sand and my 56 is my go to for chipping around the green.

I think the important thing is a consistent gap between clubs. So in your case it would be 44 50 56.

Would these lofts give you a good even spread of yardages?

My Pw is 46 my gap 52 and I have a 58. My 58 I use for bunkers(Bullet proof now thanks to DOH) and I can double it as a lobwedge.

44 50 56 would give me a good spread but...something thats been bothering me is, I've been in a few tight spots lately where I wish I had a bit more loft. Three times in last two weeks I've been behind a greenside bunker with only a yard or two of fast links green to play with for example. To be honest I don't think I could of got close with a 58 or 60 anyway but it would of given me more of a chance.

Incidently, on the last occasion, what I did was thinned it, it hit the wall of the bunker and bounced up and stopped short of the pin. Result :D

I don't really want to have to shell out on two new wedges though, could I get my 52 bent to 50?

I dont see why not, see a pro, Most of them do it. Or can you not just open up your 56 so it plays more like a 58 or 60?

You PW seems rather 'strong' - it's the same loft as my 9i - which gives you a problem in trying to get a good span of lofts.....maybe you should consider more a 3 wedge system with a 'proper' PW and 2 SW's....

I have a 46 PW and a 50 Gap. To be honest I use the pw more as a 9 iron and the 50 as my PW. 54 sand and 58 lob complete the wedges giving me a club for all shots.

Almost.
The technology out there today is great and makes golf easier for everyone to enjoy good shot making.
In the old days (about 150 years ago)I enjoyed the challenge of only having a wedge and SW and learning to adapt my shots for different situations.
It seems now people have lost a bit of imagination and need to have 4 wedges to cater for all shots when in my day, we could manage with only 2.
And dont get me onto my old hickory shafts lol
How many of you forumers only own 2 wedges?

There's an increasing number of pros out there using 4 wedges now. My reasoning is this:-
How many times am I going to make a birdie from 200+ yards?
Answer - not often.
How many times am I going to make a birdie from 120 yards in?
Answer - more often especially if I have a club that will do the job. So a choice of wedges (as well as the other clubs too) gives me a better chance of getting close.

And the loss of imagination harks back in a way to Freddielong's post about long irons and hybrids. Why have to judge different swings and swingspeeds when I can choose a different club and make the same swing. After all, isn't that what we are supposed to do from 3-9 iron? Make the same swing? If the clubs are available why not use them(back to hybrids again). I know some will like 3 or even 2 wedges but I feel 4 gives me a better choice.

I agree with you completely. Its easier with 4 wedges
I just miss the old days I guess when people could play the half swing shots.
Phil Mickleson has been known to carry 5 wedges, but then he's always been a bit wierd lol
