Hi,

Was asked a rules question whilst in Pro Shop today and I have no idea

Ladies Stableford Comp. First green (par 3)
Lady A hits green, marks ball, puts ball in pocket
Lady B puts tee shot in bunker, takes 4 to get out, can't score, asks Lady A to pick ball up (Lady A puts ball in her pocket) whilst she rakes the bunker
Lady A then 2 putts for a par
When picking ball out of hole, Lady A realises she putted with Lady B's ball

What is the ruling please?

A "wrong ball" is any ball other than the player's:
• ball in play;
• provisional ball; or
• second ball played under Rule 3-3 or Rule 20-7c in stroke play;

Ball in play includes a ball substituted for the ball in play, whether or not the substitution is permitted. A substituted ball becomes the ball in play when it has been dropped or placed (see Rule 20-4).

So, she has played a wrong ball. It is not her ball in play, or a provisional, or a second ball, and has not been substituted under the rules.

The player is penalised 2 strokes under Rule 15-2. Decision 15-2/4.

When the ball is replaced it is a substitution for the original ball and not a wrong ball. It therefore becomes the ball in play ,but as the substitution was not permitted under the rules the player incurs the above penalty.

Cheers for that

Ah, missed that one. Yes, the invalid substitution is indeed covered in the wrong ball definition above.
The easy way to remember is if the 'wrong' ball has been your hand and is then played, it is not a wrong ball but is a substituted ball.

Depending on the situation, it may be correctly or incorrectly substituted.
