Would you pay to play Pinehurst

From my (limited) experience of playing a round at Doral I'd say it's horses for courses. Yes there was a big chuffin fountain in the middle of a big chuffin lake, but the course was lovely for a parkland course. It's no links course carved out of the natural landscape, but it didn't feel artificial too me.

Would be interesting to see what those who have played them think (not having a go here, but I think with Trump you get a lot baggage which will influence people's opinion of his courses, and the proof is in the pudding so to speak.)

I have played Doral pre-Trump and was not impressed. It reminded me of The Belfry with Florida weather and trees. I hate The Belfry.

Have also played Trump Natiobal LA. Saw Mark Wahlberg there and that (and the price tag) were the only memorable aspect. Quart in a pint pot with nice conditioning but tarted up to appeal those who who like that sort of thing. Really disappointing.

if i was in that neck of the woods no question.

has some aspects of Royal Dornoch, that Donald Ross tried on the course.... it must have been the greens from what i saw in my limited viewing on TV.

I'm probably in the minority but I wouldn't fancy it, small greens with some very punishing run off areas often bringing bare lies and if you stray off the fairly narrow fairways by a couple of yards you are relying on luck as to whether you will even be a able to hit the ball with all those tufts of grass. In my opinion its just as tricked up as some of those big American courses just at the other end of the spectrum

I think to be fair, the landing areas are quite generous if you employ the correct strategy. Bang your driver off every tee and sure, it could get penal. Kaymer hit a lot of irons off the tee and kept out of the trouble most of the time. As for the greens, guess you won't be interested in playing Royal Dornoch or Royal County Down either then?

i thought it looked like a muni

It is......just happens to be one of the better ones ;)

I think that there is potentially a point to be made here, just a pity that Trump was the one to make it.

Forget about the dedicated golfers and golf fans, they can appreciate the quality of a course without any need to tart it up. Now take the average person, sitting at home flicking through channels, the occasional watcher and the person who plays maybe a couple of rounds a year and has a passing interest in the sport. Does anyone think that, in the absence of Tiger Woods or other household names that may grab their attention, they may be more inclined to watch a bit longer if the course is more 'in your face' stunning. Yes is may appear OTT and gaudy to some but to the person who is not a golfing traditionalist with maybe only a passing interest in the sport, that may appear to them to be the pinnacle of natural beauty. Add to that the constant cheering of birdies etc at the normal target golf PGA event and the less dedicated golf fan may not flick the channel over straight away.

They made an excellent point in the coverage that because of the speed of the greens they were effectively tiny in size and the slopes were too severe for greens of that speed. When you see pro's de-greening putts you know average joe wouldn't break 100 so no I probably wouldn't pay to play it unless it was set up a lot easier. As for the look of it I loved it abd enjoyed watching it.

I enjoy playing a strategic course and love links golf but don't see the fun in laying up with an iron on most par 4s, because the rough is too much of a lottery with no bail out area, then having to hit a long iron/hybrid into greens that have no margin for error. I thought that with all the protection around the greens at Pinehurst you had to be absolutely pinpoint with your approach play or you could be faced with a near impossible shot.

If playing RCD or Dornoch means landing a 5 iron on a sixpence for most par 4s then no I don't fancy it.

I'd definitely pay to play it.
It looked fantastic.
The fairways were relatively wide for US Opens & the green surrounds interesting (not just deep rough).
The US Open is meant to be one of the toughest challenges of the season and the players know where they can or can't miss.
I'd love to have a go and see if it can make a fool of me.

The locals dont have much time for trump in scotland and visitors play his course , pinehurst is a great course , its better then the normal us open course where if you miss the green you have only one shot to play , a slash from thick rough , a touch of luck indeed , no they got it right and thats why a european won , .......................will MK win the open ?

It would scare the pants off me. Tight and nowhere to hide if you don't hit the green. even if you do, no guarantee the ball will stay there. Heck, much better to be scared for four hours there than a quick go on a roller coaster

Don't necessarily think it would be that scary - It won't be set up for a US Open so greens would be quick but not stupid quick, fairways are fifty percent wider than they were pre Coore Crenshaw changes and I certainly wouldn't be playing it off the Open tees - they've got places left to play it next week in the days after the Ladies US Open if anyone fancies a challenge.

Pinehurst did a great wee series to advertise their academy about two average golfers playing number 2 then having a week of lessons before taking it on again and trying to take ten shots off their initial score - it was filmed before revamp though - if they want a hacker to reshoot it I'm their man
